The M6 in the 5.0

Why did Ford go with the MT82 as opposed to the TR6060 like the camaro used?

Was it a cost reason or what? Can someone shed some like on this for me.

Thanks, why would it weigh more? Is it built to handle more hp and tq?

TR6060 weighs more because it is made with heavier components to handle more torque.

Yeah, I think the MT82 is rated at like 400 ft.lbs. and the TR6060 is over 550 ft.lbs. in standard form and aftermarket versions are up to 700-750 ft.lbs.

+1 to what others have said about cost and weight. As far as the Tremec, I believe this is how they are broken out:

TR6060 = 600 lbs-ft capacity, 6 forward gears, 0 version (no current revisions)
TR3650 = 360 lbs-ft capacity, 5 forward gears, 0 version

The MT82 also has a much more aggressive gear package than the TR6060 that is better suited for high RPM applications.

If nothing else, shift quality is MUCH better in the MT.... Ever try getting a Camaro/Corvette/Challenger into reverse with just one hand?

The tr6060 in the camaro is of a lesser torque rating than the tr6060's in the vette and gt500. hence why they break so much tranny parts, GM cheaped on the gearset for the 6060 in the camaro (m10 gearset holds 430ft-lbs)

TR6060 has 2 overdrive gears ... MT82 only 1 ... The TR6060 is more like a 5-speed than a 6-speed ...

Since the Mustang trans only has one overdrive the 5 forward gears are geared more aggressively than the 6060.

4th gear typically has a 1:1 ratio. Anything lower than that is considered overdrive - ie. 0.84:1. The MT82's 5th gear is ~1:1 and 6th gear is overdrive. The TR6060s 4th is 1:1 and 5th/6th are both overdrive (0.84 and 0.57 respectively). Less shifting and lower RPM in 6th with the TR6060. More shifting and better acceleration with MT82.

According to this site the TR6060 offers many different gear configurations. Ford could have had them gear it the same as the MT82.

Look at my post above yours. In a 6060 4th is a 1:1 gear ratio and fifth is 1:1 in the M82, which gives you an extra gear and they can gear the non-overdrive gears lower. 1st is 3.66 in the Mustang and in the Camaro 1st is 3.01

Really just look at the Camaro VS the Corvette, different gear ratios, same transmission. I know people who have driven both with the knowledge that they both have TR6060s, but came out thinking the Corvette's was better somehow. He was pretty convinced they cut corners on the Camaro's version.

Anyway, cost reason. Also Ford has been working on transmissions with Getrag for the past several years, and from that they came out with the MT82. First car to use it, so it's not a stretch to think that they tailored the transmission to the 5.0 Coyote. Notably the GT500 uses a TR6060 as I recall.

That has nothing to do with the transmission, feel the TR6060 in the 11 GT500, smooth as butter and much nicer then the MT in the GTs in my opinion.
