Consumer Reports
is calling out Ford, saying the new C-Max and Fusion hybrids don't get anywhere near the 47 miles per gallon the automaker claims.

Several automakers have faced backlash after consumers discovered their cars don't quite hit the lofty fuel economy figures promised by the companies, and Ford may be the newest casualty of all this pesky fact-checking by critics and watchdogs.

The magazine drove the cars 2,000 miles and consistently got around 39 mpg for the Fusion and 37 mpg for the C-Max. Jake Fisher, director of auto testing for Consumer Reports, said this is the largest discrepancy between what automakers MPG claims and the actual real-world driving results.

"It's not to say these are bad cars at all; they still get excellent fuel economy," Fisher said. "But we've been doing this for a long time, and we've never seen such a difference between the EPA estimates and our numbers."

Ford said its figures were certified by the EPA, but the EPA only tests about 10 to 15 percent of the cars on the road. Ford said some early reports from customers showed the cars getting even better fuel economy than 47 mpg.

"This reinforces the fact that driving styles, driving conditions, and other factors can cause mileage to vary," said Wes Sherwood, a spokesman for Ford. For customers who want to optimize their fuel economy, the cars come with different driving coach software to help drivers get better fuel economy, he said.

If the EPA certifies a vehicle, shouldn't the EPA be receiving the 'call out?' (Same in Hyundai's case as well?)

And I have read many reports of people exceeding the EPA on these vehicles as well.

This. Only way I could see something being fishy was if Ford sent cars with modified tunes or non-stock calibrations or parts.

The solution is simple: get a car of each type off the lot and test.

I'm getting sick and tired of CR being a staple of automotive journalism. It's like a bunch of monkeys with Down syndrome reviewing cars over there. Stick to finding out which toaster or vacuum cleaner is best.

EPA to investigate Ford C-Max, Fusion fuel economy

http://www.autoblog.com/2012/12/10/e...-fuel-economy/

The EPA has said it "will look at the report and data" from Consumer Reports indicating that the 2013 Ford C-Max and Fusion hybrids don't come close to achieving their fuel economy estimates of 47 miles per gallon. In CR testing, the C-Max Hybrid averaged 37 mpg; the Fusion Hybrid averaged 39.

Consumer Reports can go **** themselves. They're a worthless piece of trash that hasn't had accurate reports for over a decade. They've succumbed to advertising dollars and making manufacturer's happy just like all the other magazines.

I drove one not too long ago, and even with me and the sales people hooning it a bit, it still had 44 mpg overall, and I saw it over 50 on the trip I was on. mpg figures vary so much depending on how a person drives, you could get 35 and you could get 60 mpg.

I drive my dad's SUV on occasion, it's not supposed to get but 18 on the hwy, and both of us get 24. And we've averaged 20mpg combined over about 10k miles now.

Ford Announces Software Fix for 2013 Fusion, 2013 Escape Fire Risk

http://wot.motortrend.com/ford-annou...#axzz2EgCkbwu1

The fix is a software update that will allow the cars’ computers to better cope with engine overheating conditions. Ford says that the cars’ original programming couldn’t deal with a loss of coolant-system pressure during a “unique overheating condition that could occur under unique operating conditions.” Ford says the recall takes less than a day at a Ford dealership, although the dealer may need the car for longer than a day depending on workload. The recall starts next week.

Thanks, Zastava_101.

If anyone owns any one of these vehicles, please contact your dealer as soon as possible. Verify if yours is part of the recall, and if it is make an appointment with them.

As unfortunate as it is that this is happening, pretty cool (IMO) that it can be fixed with software changes. It shows that the problem is less build quality/quality control than it is incorrect calibration of the systems that operate the vehicle. While most of the world won't see it that way, it sure is interesting

I think both of the recalls will get lost in the campaign of the vehicles. The Escape might suffer a bit, but compared to other manufacturers, they are small recalls and early on in the model run.

I don't think they're small recalls when you tell the customer, who just spent $25,000-$35,000 on a brand new car, "don't drive it until the fix is available" ...

Ford stepped up and bit the bullet on loaners while they worked on a fix. I think most people will let it go and move on. In the grand scheme of things it's a minor speed bump. Had they done this in 2-3 years and had to recall millions of vehicles, it would be a totally different story.

any manufacturer states this with just about any recall. Its just a CYA statement. Regardless if anything serious is possible, putting this somewhat limits their liability if something were to occur.
