Secondary USB port used with Sync
I found information on the secondary USB port in late models (mine is a 2014) and found the port and plugged in a micro USB to standard USB cable. I added a female/female coupler and plugged my thumb drive into it. Sync found it immediately without my having to do anything else and simply picked up where it had left off playing music.
I now have both power ports and the USB port in the center console available for charging phones, etc. and still have my thumb drive providing many hours of music through Sync.

The Sync module is a black box up behind the glove box. When you open your glove box you can push the sides toward the center to get 'stops' to clear the outer frame and the box will drop down further. There is a cable coming out of the black box and next to it is a micro USB port. I ordered the female/female coupler from monoprice.com for a few bucks. My cable is coiled and tied and the large USB end is draped over the back of the glove box so it is accessible with the glove box in the normal open position. That way I can easily remove my thumb drive if I want to add more music to it.
There is a thread on here somewhere that has photos of the procedure I described, but I don't think you need them. The photo shows the type of micro USB needed.

I'm not using a phone. I have a 32GB USB thumb drive with somewhere close to 300 albums on it. The thumb drive was really cheap (an HP through Amazon) and is only about 1" long. I spent a fair amount of time working on setting up the music files with the correct tags so I can initiate music with voice commands playing artist, album, track, or genre.
My USB cable connects to the secondary USB port, the coupler connects to the large end of the USB cable, and the thumb drive plugs into the other female side of the coupler.

Just make sure you're subscribed to a thread you like. Then when you need to find it again, you only need to go through your subscriptions. Makes things easier to find later. That's what I do.
