Good for you! Made a chicken noodle w/veg yesterday too. Souper good souper healthy.
I always buy whole chickens on sale and load the freezer. Usually cut them up and bbq, always save the backbone/carcass and freeze till I have 3 and make soup. Calcium!
This last week I slow roasted in the oven for a couple of hours. The breasts made 4 meals, the thighs made 2 fajita meals, froze the drums and wings for bbq sauce football lunches. So got 8 meals plus several servings of soup - for $5 bucks!
Cheap Charlie has got this depression living down!

Stopped for Chinese food in the little town of Floresville, Texas. Never been to this place before but it was busy with oilfield trucks and truckers and thought what the heck. It was darn good. Best and freshest I've had in years. $8 with a drink too.

Mom made fried chicken, black eyed peas, mac n cheese, cornbread, and greens.

Not bad for a Cali boy huh?

Yeah, nothing stereotypical about that meal for a black guy.

Just kidding man, sounds fantastic.

Black eyed peas and turnip greens are a traditional meal in the South on the first of the year. Supposed to be good luck for the new year. Not sure where it comes from, but my granny always cooked black eyed peas, and greens (along with other stuff) on new years day.

My grandmother swore by the black eyed peas thing. If she didn't have them on New Years Day her year would be cursed with bad luck.

Yup. Was tempted to cook them today along with cabbage but mom will have that at her house when I get off work tonight.

Well we will be having a ham and mashed potatoes. I'm sure a green bean casserole and probably the wife will make her broccoli cheese casserole. I can't stand it but the kids love it. Smells like *** when it's cooking.

Yeah! That's what my mom told me too. Wonder where that comes from? She forced me to get some black eyed peas because of it.

I remember not liking them as a kid, but now I just put some Louisiana hot sauce on em and its all good.

I don't care much for black eyed peas, but I like crowder peas, field peas, etc.
