Always thought it was cool as **** that the bass was the lead, that's what made it so interesting to me (not to mention that is was just an all around great song, writing, vocals, etc). I also always wondered if it was recorded with an upright (or a bass fiddle as we call it in the south, lol) like he played in the vid.

I also appreciated that he played bass as the lead. I'm sure there's more but he and McCartney are the only ones that come to mind when McCartney was singing lead.
I always appreciated that the Police were a trio. Not sure how many actual musicians were used in recording studio but I respect the trio. Especially since I played in one rather inglorious as it was.
Do not believe it was an upright bass on the LP. I just don't think it sounded like one.
People talk about St. Elmo's Fire, Breakfast Club, etc., defining the 80's, to me this song defined the 80's. I didn't know what the words were really talking about until a few years later, but the music did things to me that no other song did before; combination of it being a great song and my hormones finally reaching a certain point of maturity.
