i ve written numerous times about my mothers family military history and am proud as can be of it but have always lamented bout the lack of knowledge on my fathers side . i didn`t even know my grandfather moons name ..all that has changed recently ..one of my older brothers found a distant family member who has collected just about everything there is to know ..i had known for many years that there were moons in the owens cross roads area and had been told that moontown was named after my moon relatives . yes ..we are from the same tree .. i had wished to find moons integrated in military history and boy did i ever ..and it is just a stroke of luck that i exist today .. great great great grandfather nathaniel moon who was a veteran on the war of 1812 went on to father 11 kids .. 5 boys and 6 girls .. when the civil war rolled around all 5 boys joined up but nathaniel said one of them had to stay home .. mother could not live losing all her boys .. the one who stayed was my great great grandfather ..the tomb stones in the pictures tell a terrible tale ..and the cemetery is of my family ..and there is revolutionary history as well .. more on that later as i study the information i just recently got ..

Good to see you posting again Willie. Quite a few of us were concerned you had been off the board so long. Glad to hear things are okay.
Pretty cool family history. Any idea of the origin of the Moon surname?

Only Mooneyham's I have ever heard of were blowers from back in the day.

Which kind of fits in with Willie and the person he is.

two thousand years or so ago people only had one name ..Moses , Paul , Saul , Simon and so on .. But as the population of the world grew that was beginning to create a problem .. too many Pauls , Simons and Peters to keep up with ,,being as Paul was a jewel smith by trade he became known as Paul Smith .. John had a son .. he was called Johns Son which later morphed into Johnson ..and so it went ...the moon name came in to being several hundred years ago .. there was a time when denmark was part of the english empire .. the king of england commissioned an army from the ruler of denmark .. wanting to empress the kIng of england the ruler of denmark sent his finest men .. erect in stature ,athletic in build, brave ,light skinned, red hair and blue eyes ,all over six feet tall which was big at the time .they flew a flag that had a Half moon insignia and did most of their fighting at nite by moonlite ..see a rend here ? .they won numerous battles and to show his gratitude the King of england offered them land to settle .. many of them did this and took the surname Moon ..
