Angry Valve cover VCT sensor grommet leak

I recently replaced my valve covers with the Ford Racing “chrome” powder coat covers. Just this last week, I noticed a small oil leak which appears to be coming from the VCT sensor grommet on the driver’s side cam cover. These are the 07-08 style covers with the smaller grommets, not the larger easy to replace ones that came on the 05-06 style covers. Can anyone tell me if the 08 style grommets are available, and if so does the cover need to be removed for replacement?

Tim

They are replaceable. I had to get a new one for one of my covers, because when I took them off for painting I tried to bang out the grommet, and I ripped the rubber seal on it. It had to be specially ordered at the time, as there was no stock anywhere close by.

The Part number for it is: 7L1E-6C535-AA

Thanks a million Sean! Before I order you do have the revised cam covers with fewer bolts and the smaller grommets like these? Also, did you have to pull the cover to perform the swap? If not, how did you remove the grommet?

Tim

Thanks!

Tim

yep.

I have a 2007 with the "newer" cover.

I already had the cover off for painting. Those things are tight to put back in though! Lots of loving taps!

It seems to match the black intake better.

But I'd like to see a shot of the engine with those chromes!

I also have swapped to the FRPP Chrome Covers. There seemed to be a leak with the stock valve covers I had by the VCT sensor grommet and when I switched over to the chromes, the leak went away so I didnt think anything of it.

Heres a picture of the covers:

Hey guys, I have this same issue. I didn't have this issue until I upgraded to the High Output Whipple SC (I had the regular SC non-intercooled before). Now I get oil leaking out of the driver side VCT grommet. I also have the Ford Racing chrome valve covers, which came with the grommets. I used the above part number and purchased two new grommets. The assumption is that the stock valve covers and the FR chrome covers use the same grommet, which looks to be the case.

My question is has anyone changed these out without removing the valve covers? It looks like I can leave the sensor in place, but just unplug the electrical wire, and then perhaps some how dig out the old grommet and some how pop the new one in, all without messing up my nice valve covers and without dropping either the old or new grommet down inside the valve cover. Please confirm.

As a side effect of the oil leaking from the VCT grommet, I am collecting oil in the adjacent spark plug area. It's not real clear how the oil is moving from the VCT grommet to the spark plug area, but it is. Has anyone had this side effect? At some point that area will fill up with oil and kill the plug. It also sometimes drips on my headers (stinks like crazy), which is how I found out about this problem in the first place.

I've also read that you can get leaks from the PVC port as well, under these same conditions. The solution is a oil catch can, which is better for your engine anyway. So I've orderd one of those too.
