Turn Key and won't turnover

I thought I would post a problem I just had with my 2005 V6 and resolution that I never thought of:

For the last month or so I would get in my car and turn the key and the car wouldn't turnover. All the lights on the dash worked, everything seemed normal but it wouldn't turnover. After a few tries it would start. I searched this forum and a few posts mentioned checking the neg battery terminal and fuses inside the engine compartment. everything checked out OK but still the same problem, Turn the Key and nothing. Then one day it stopped completely, Turn the key and nothing. While sitting in the driver seat I took out the key and the answer was right in front of me.

CONTAINS REPLACEABLE BATTERY

My car wouldn't start because my KEY was dead.

You have a battery on your key, and not a Key Fob?

must be a aftermarket key, the ford keys are RFID, powered inductively...

So .... did a battery fix it?

Was it one of those "Key Fob transmitter / Key" combinations where the key folds into it?
