I got up to 140 in my 2003 GT, or so the speedometer said. I've been told that the speedometer can be off by as much as 15mph after getting over a certain speed.

I don't know about the speedo but you can calculate your top speed pretty closely if you noted your rpm's, know your final drive, ratio, etc. I can't find the formula for that right now. Maybe someone else can post it.

Still, an indicated 140 is dang fast. I backed off at 130 once becuase I knew if the CHP caught me I'd be looking at jail time. Never again, except on a closed road course.

So either a racing chip or find a way to reprogram it?
Yes.

Assuming in top gear, a simple ratio can be used to calculate top speed if two bits of road test data are taken.

RPM1/V1 = RPM2/V2

For example, if the follwwing road test data is taken:

RPM1 = 3000
V1 = 90 MPH

The vehicle speed at 4500 RPM is:

V2 = V1 x RPM2/RPM1

V2 = 90 X (4500/3000)

V2 = 135 MPH

The problem is that the areodynamic load increases dramaticlly at speed, making most cars HP limited, and in turn, engine speed limited. These cars then will not pull red line at top speed.

I guess that the 05 GT will top out at just before 150. That way they can advertise it as being faster than last year's but it also shouldn't out run last year's SVT. I think that's the most important thing - not out running an SVT.

They could still advertise it as faster, because it reaches it's theoretical top speed more quickly.

I won't take a guess because I talked to a Ford engineer who told it is set at 143mph due to the tires used.

What I can't figure out is why Ford has downgraded the tires from the 94-04 size of 245/45ZR17 to 235/55/17.

The ugly rims and skinny high profile tires ruin the looks of the car, it needs the 18's with some wide lo-pro rubber ASAP!

i went over 90mph in my old VW Golf,,,,,,and i would not recommend doing that in a small car like that! Darn thing was shaking and rattling like crazy. Felt like i was about to flip and crash. Makes me wonder why the speedometer goes up to 120???
Ahem, I have reached some extralegal speeds on lonely country roads in my Jetta (and the speedo goes up to 160 mph). No problems, as long as I had the windows up

I do believe in Montana that some roadways are unregulated in terms of max speed (I'm not sure if the Feds reinstated the 55MPH law or not, I know in the '90s that Montana's hiways had no max speed, just 'be sensible')

What kind of aftermarket parts can you get to increase the top speed...

And, how the heck do you take out the stupidass governor!?
Get a big aluminum wing :R:

To pull out the chip, buy a service manual (when they come out), pull out the chip, replace with new barely-legal hacked up chip...and release your power

Not to go into a long story,,,,,,but i basicly turned down the wrong driveway where a few drunk redknecks were. They chased me in their truck down a very narrow single lane road. I could feel and hear the floorboard and windows rattling :shock: . Mines a 87 Golf (Pics Here) , and i will never go over 80 in it again !

needless to say i got two tickets that day in Kansas about 15 mins apart. I was to say the least.
Man its to easy to speed in Kansas. I've got a brother living in Witchita and on the way there I popped a tick or two above 140 on the speedo before I began to close in on traffic.

ever talk to anybody about how regularly you go over 100? They are convinced your nuts. I keep telling them though its not that huge a leap from 70 to 100 and after you do it a coupla times you dont even realize it.

Only down side is, when you get in traffic going 45 to 60 it feels like your crawling at 25
