Guesses on the GT's top speed?

great movie...
Most cars are electronically limited to 110mph because they use cheapo tires. My guess is the mustang's top speed will be around what it is now.. although some selective computer programming can change that :drive:

Top speed is cool, but IMO, its all about acceleration. If I wanted top speed, I'd buy a Ferrari (hehe....but I guess I'd get acceleration also though ).

I don't think I will ever be fortunate enough to hit 150 w/o being chased by Buford T. Justice.
I agree Dan... but maybe a roadtrip to local states where radar detectors are legal would be fun

You think insurance is high now, try getting caught doing over 100mph. I'll pass thank you. Maybe on track in the quarter.
Now, during daily driving, accelerating quickly UP TO the speed limit is a bit more legal if you want a bunch of small kicks.
OT: BTW, I spanked a suped up integra yesterday with my PGT. That was fun. I'd probably just ignore them in the 05. Not worth the trouble.

i had my z28 up to 145 think it was supposed to have a top speed of 155... but anyway doing 145 on a rural 2 lane road probably wasnt the greatest idea but i was in a hurry.
needless to say i got two tickets that day in Kansas about 15 mins apart. I was to say the least.
I had stopped for gas after the 145 episode and slowed down a little. I think i was doing 90 in a 65 or something. So i asked the cop how much the fine was and he says $100 or whatever and I say wow that's not bad. (In TX would have been much higher.) I guess I should have kept my mouth shut cuz 10 miles down the road his buddy who I'm sure he radioed and told him I was headed that way got me for 10mph over the limit. ! would be an understatement. I almost got outta the car which probably would have made it worse for me. I mean who gets stopped for 10mph over?!
If you drive really fast all day long like from TX-KS 10mph over seems like 35mph. Anyway that was the last time I got any speeding tix..1997 I think. Two in one day was enough.

i went to traffic school while back (72 in a 55),,,,,,and this guy was also their for doing 122mph in his mustang through a school zone! Said when he got pulled over,,,he was handcuffed and spent the night in jail. They ended up taking his lisence for a few years. Also was fined couple hundred dollars and can't remember what else. All that because he was late for work.

But back to topic. Do any of you have plans to tkae your new Mustang to a road track and take a few hot laps to check out your top speed? That seems the safest thing to do, and a whole lot cheaper than shipping it to Germany for a run on the autobahn.

The '05 GT is getting 3.55:1 gears rather than the 3.27:1 that the current GTs have. That will improve acceleration off the line, at the cost of top speed. Any idea how much that will affect the car's top speed?

Specifially @ 70 MPH, 5th gear, MTX, an 04 GT will be ~ 2215 RPM and an 05 will be 2201 RPM.
The auto is a different story because it gets a 3.31 rear end.

Back to the whole speedo thing...I thought that was kinda tacky having the speedometer only go to 140 when they've been using the 150 dials on the SN95's. I dunno...maybe it's just me but the 140 top number just doesn't seem right.....looks like the first mod I'd put on it (if I ever decided to get one) would be a new instrument cluster with a bit more numericals on it.

Mustang's speedometer goes to 145mph..one tick mark after 140. (see attached pic).
My Camaro's speedometer only goes to 120mph, and I've hit that before. I'm not a NASCAR driver, so 140mph would be plenty for me!
No radar detector laws in Texas, but I think being caught going over 100mph is an instant "Go Directly to Jail" card as involuntary attempted manslaughter.

Top speed is usually governed by powertrain bending and tire speed rating. Since the 05 car has a 2 piece driveshaft, it will have higher powertrain bending threshold than SN95 GT. Therefore, the top speed will be electronically limited to tire speed rating. Each manufacturer uses their own guidelines on how much below the top speed of the tire they limit the vehicle too. Ford may be a bit more conservative after Firestone incident on Explorers. I would venture to guess 143-145mph range.
