For $5,995, Ford will apply a matte clear paint protection film to offer another level of personalization and preservation of the factory paint.

It’s no secret that Mustang owners like to customize their rides. So, it’s no surprise that Ford wants to offer more ways for Mustang owners to customize the style of their Mustang upon placing their order. One thing that is fairly common amongst virtually all new cars is the addition of paint protection film. It’s a great way to preserve your factory paint and protect it from door dings and scratches. The majority of paint protection films are clear. However, choosing matte clear gives a sort of frosted look to any paint job and Ford can save you the trouble of finding a trustworthy installer to get the job done.

In a recent press release Ford outlined the option and what models are eligible. It costs a cool $5,995 to option it on your car. In addition, there are a handful of restrictions as to what options and models are available for the matte clear touch. For example, at the time of writing, convertible Mustang buyers do not have the option. Ford does say that it will be available on convertible models toward the end of the year. Here are the details on what models do and don’t qualify for this option.

Paint Stripe Cars Need Not Apply

Buyers who opt for the Wheel & Stripe Package, “Over-the-Top” Racing Stripe, Custom Hood, and Accent Painted Stripe on Dark Horse models, and California Special Packages can not add the matte clear film. In addition, GT performance and GT Premium models have to have the spoiler delete option for the clear film option. Those who order a Dark Horse with the film also lose the hood graphic. Finally, Nite Pony Package cars with the Raised Rear Wing do qualify for it. Phew! Otherwise, the film is available on EcoBoost, GT, and Dark Horse models.

Ford says that the option is available for order as of February 27th. However, deliveries of cars with the option will start in June 2024. Best of all, the film is covered under the Ford Three-year/36,000-mile standard bumper-to-bumper warranty.

“Mustang has been about driving freedom and freedom of expression for 60 years, and our new Matte Clear Film provides a whole new way for customers to make Mustang their own,” said Laurie Transou, Mustang Chief Program Engineer.

The film comes from legendary automotive finish manufacturer PPG. It is made to withstand everything from rock chips and dings to bird droppings, road residue, and even the harsh detergents used at hand and touchless car washes. Above all else, though, it honestly looks phenomenal. We only wish there were more photos showing a variety of colors wearing the film. We’ll just have to keep our eyes peeled come June 2024 for examples on the road.

Overall, it’s hard to argue with the benefits of its aesthetic and protective properties. If you’re down for the look, adding $6,000 to the price of your Mustang could ultimately save you thousands on future paint fixes.  Of course, if you’re not about the look, you still have the option to outsource a clear film or vinyl wrap application once your Mustang arrives!
