“The Grinch” Mustang Makes Final Round with Borrowed Engine

Fox Body Mustang goes rounds while feeding nitrous to a loaner motor.

Racers take care of each other. We don’t mean to get all Kumbaya around the Christmas tree or anything, but when the Fox Body Mustang known as “The Grinch” wounded its engine, a friend came through for the team. After a weeklong thrash to get a borrowed Chevy Big Block into the car, The Grinch promptly ran hard all day in two classes at the King of the Streets event at Great Lakes Dragaway in Wisconsin. 1320 Video was there to catch the story.

The Grinch had cleaned up in the Gangster Class at King of the Streets in 2016. However, a run at the Battle of the Titans in Michigan two weeks before the 2017 edition of KOTS wounded The Grinch’s nitrous big block.

He reached for favors and found a friend in the owners of CORNDOG, a fourth-gen Pontiac Firebird that had won at KOTS in 2015. They wanted the defending winner there this year, so the Grinch’s owner made an all-night run to Michigan for the borrowed engine.

A three-day thrash led to the borrowed engine firing for the first time at Great Lakes on Friday. You’d think that would mean easy runs, but The Grinch’s owner seems to only know running hard. The small-tire Mustang raced in two classes and while The Grinch came away without a victory, it wasn’t for lack of trying.

The Grinch made it to the Senior Class final, where an SN-95 Mustang knocked it out. That came only after going rounds in the Gangster Class and a strong run through the Senior Class. The team even threw on a special windshield for the decal that read “WE BORROWED IT.” They may have come home without an official victory, but The Grinch’s crew picked it up a big win simply by making a sleepless thrash.
