Hi All,

I'm working with a 2011 Mustang GT.

Recently, the windshield wipers started randomly turning on despite the multi-function switch being in the off position. Many times, the washer fluid motor will randomly turn on too without warning.

The wipers will stay on in the high position; however, when I turn them off, they do not return to the bottom of the windshield, and just stick where they were, until I turn them back on or they randomly start going again. The intermittent wipers and low speed wiper setting does not work.

The other thing I've noticed is that the high beams wont turn on (when the multi-function switch is pressed forward), but the high beam flashers do work (when you pull the multi-function switch back)...so I don't think it is the high beam fuse.

So far, I've replaced the multi-function switch with a new one and the problems still persist. I've also checked the wiper motor fuse and it is OK.

I would much appreciate it if anyone can offer some insight as to what else could be causing the issue...I have no idea what other electrical components are involved with this system. Thanks in advance.

BTW, have you tried disconnecting the battery to reboot the systems in the car. I don't know if the wiper system is controlled by one of the compooters in the car, but it's easy enough to give it a shot..

 

Hmm, perplexing issue. If you already changed out the switch looking at the wiring harness and BCM may be next.

 

I have seen this issue on older mid-90's Ford Rangers. On those the Multi-function switch on the turn sign lever was bad. Usually the Ranger switch would corrode and required replacement.

I think they had a recall on the Rangers back then...

 

Sounds to me like possibly a Smart Junction Box Problem. I know the 2005-09 were prone to receiving water damage from clogged drains. Unsure if the problem persists in the 10-14s

 

The wipers are designed with the motor relays hard wired to the multifunction switch for high speed but all other functions (low speed, intermittent, and wiper parking) are controlled by microprocessor. This is a safety feature to ensure wipers can be used (only on high speed) if the internal microprocessor fails. If the microprocessor fails, you will have high speed wipers but no other speed and the wipers won't park when turned off - just as you describe.

 

I have found that water entering the cavity on the side of the wiper motor is causing my 'Stang's wipers to operate in 'ghost' mode. I found the rubber cowl drains plugged which allowed water to submerge the motor and harness connector. That was 3 years ago, happened again last week, when I found more water in the motor cavity (still original motor). Happened again yesterday, I'm ordering a tube of dielectric grease to fill the cavity and harness connector in attempts to banish the moisture. Fingers crossed.

Hi ive recently had the same issue with my 2011 mustang several times actually what happens is when going through the carwash or long periods of rain the area underneath the wiper motor holds water its a design fault anyway i changed my wiper motor seems to fix this issue make sure to silicone caulk the cracks on the wiper motor or youll find yourself doing it again in a week or two when the wiring harness gets wet again i also caulked around the lip of the plug let it dry then wrapped the plug with electrical tape hope this helps ive replaced the motor like 3× now
