They call it a pacifier for a reason. Some kids need them, some don't. My oldest wouldn't take one and he wasn't a thumb sucker either and he fussed all the time. My youngest loved his pacifier and it soothed him, but we got rid of it before he was 3. My step-daughter sucked her thumb for a really long time. Better a pacifier than a thumb, in my opinion. At least you can take a pacifier away.
