Arin, I've been reading your "blog" here off and on. I think 250 HP will be more than enough for you for the time being.
Did you ever consider the possibility of purchasing a used 289 V8. They're very easy to work on and you might find one available to you at a lower price than a 302 that is in good running condition. Remember the 302's from the 70's and on up to about 1983 were pretty anemic on power. If you do look for a 302 you might want to consider one from an 85 GT (carbed version of course). They were stock with 210 HP. You would be able to tinker around with a larger carb and a performance camshaft for some added power.
Whichever route you choose I would suggest going with at least an 8.8" rear. Your rear is currently a 7.5" (I believe, I very well could be wrong) In any case it may hold up for a bit but you should probably upgrade it now and be done with it.
Lastly, with this added power I would definetley be investing some $$$ in the stopping and handling department. Don't let all the power go to your frizzy head man. I would hate to see you build your dream car and lose it due to poor handling and braking.
These are just my suggestions. Post more pics of your car soon. It sounds like its really coming along nicely

thanks for the kind words and insight andy
but i already got a 302 out of a 90 lincoln and an AOD together for under $200 (80K on em, but i suppose u get what u pay for.. this isnt a super drag car anyhow)
and i can see where u might think its a 7.5, but its an 8". not 8.8 mind you, just 8" lol. it'll be fine for now, at least, until i get to around 300+ crank hp, then im planning on an 8.8. but i swear as soon as this car is fully assempled, ill really be wuite happy with how it is. maybe some paint here some rust fixing there and its just about perfect.
oih wait... a working radio would be nice
as for stopping power, well, it has discs up fron and drums out back right now... and im also saving up for a 5 lug discs all the way around conversion.
like ill get an 8.8, with five lug discs out of a late model wrecked stang or somesuch, and same with the hubs out front and then i can not only stop better, but it increases my wheel choices (i'd really like some 17" magnums or 95 cobra Rs on here...)
and once that is done, i can say im done, for now at least
im despite my frizzy hair, im not totally nuts
ive accepted that there will always be somone faster than me. expecieally when theres TWO ppl i know with bick block chevelles and 5.0s that run 10s
and heck my cuz just bought an 04 crate motor and T56 for his 97 GT vert (sunset orange
) so i know for sure im not gonna be faster than him
if i can break into the mid/low 13s ill be happy.
but there are still two crucial roadblacks right now:
my folks dont think i should get my license, tho i could have had it last april
and my uncle just avoids me when i ask "hey.. when can i bring the car down to your shop to put it together?" wont even acknowledge me. just kind sits there, stares, and laughs at me
i want my baby to be up and running
i didnt pay my lifes savings just for her to sit there and grow old...
i mean the best i can do is start her up every now and then. and then add the fact that shes not allowed in the garage, the bimmer goes there....
ah well, im :ranting: now, so ill stop lol
oh and andy,. kinda off, but its my topic and ill go off if i want :P
.. have you heard from lynell lately? she hasnt been around and just wanted to make sure all is well

he might be trying to figure out what that thing on your head is :P
I'm just joking dude.
Seriously though, does your car have the same bolt pattern as mine, does the same 5 lug / 4 wheel disc work for both? I'd like to get that too...

its not a kit... lol
but we do have the same pattern, which is why fox wheels fit IIs
U can get a kit from like www.50resto.com or something, or mustangsunlimited.com
i have to find a wrecked car snt yank off what i want
OH and time to inform y'all of my new plan.
well as u kno, a V8 swap is tough. i still need the wiring harness and springs and whatnot and then for the AOD i need to cut of the crossmember and re weld it in a diff place and abunch of crap like that
sooooo arin thinks hes going to keep it as a V6. im thinking about selling the motor/trans (a good $1K there) my edlebrock performer RPM ($150?) my motor mounts ($2-300, yeah II mounts are mucho!!) my shifter for the AOD ($100, tops) and using that $1400-1500 to rebuild the 2.8L, maybe get it stroked out to 4.0, get the heads ported and polished too. ill keep my sidepipes/glasspacks and the holley carb tho, those i can still use.
plus i can keep the "original motor" so to speak. and i've decided that im sick of trying to bum off my uncle. personally, i dont want it to be a freebie (which it would be if i took it there) and i really dont like how his mechanics work on cars that arent their own. i worked there for a summer.... not pretty.. lol if u saw the way they did alignments... *cringe*
so with that money, im going to take it to a pro machine/engine shop sometime over the winter break and get this done.
other bonuses include:
no new wiring
no new springs
less weight
i can keep the stickshift
original motor/trans
now how many ppl do u kno with a II, let alone a cobra II, and then on top of that, who kept the 6 and made something out of it? not very common if u ask me. and when was arin ever "common" hes more of an "out there"/"what the heck is that kid thinking" type of person

Arin I think its a great idea to keep the V6. You could definetley work it, aaannddd it would pretty much keep the car original. You could then focus more on the body and getting the car more or less "show" ready in a sense.
I know after much debate I'm keeping my 99 35th bone stock. Its just not worth it to me to mod it.
As for the brake conversion, if you could find an 80's T-bird turbo coupe in a yard you could yank the rear disc brakes off and bolt them up to your car. You would need a new master cylinder but it would be considerably less expensive than going to a 5-lug conversion kit.
Look around for some mods for the 6. Its got potential. You very well may be better off making this car something of a restoration with some slight mods and then maybe purchasing an older fox chassis Mustang to tinker around with in the power dept.

Either way, good luck with it man

oh hush Jason, its not a kit for a II, but they do have kits for foxes. thats wat i meaned to say
i did some research and even joined a Ford Truck Forum to learn about the motor a bit. aparently it was avail as a 2.6, 2.8, 2.9, 4.0 and 4.0 SOHC. yes thats right, my six is the ancestor of the current base stang motor :P those variants of the motor were all in differnt years of Ford Ranger, so im taking in all the info i can and learning from every possible resource
and i thought it was hard enough finding info on IIs in general, now im going to an all truck forum to find out about my motor. not that its bad, i like trucks (and i think i even saw a certain fellow TMSer there... heres a hint, it starts with "red" and ends with "star" lol! it was good to see im not the only one i kno there, but at the same time its a great place on its own, althogh it will never be my TMS
)
well i found some places with shorty headers, and ONE, countem ONE company that makes alum 4bbl intakes (offenhauser) and i think i spotted a few cams as well. a cam, intake, 4bbl carb and shorty headers, some high flow cats maybe connected to my already purchased sidepipes in addition to getting the motor rebuilt and having a port/polish job would, i think more than suffice for my power needs :P
and i figure, i can get the rebuild, port/polish and maybe intake out of the way with the money from the old intake, the 302 intake, the 302 and the AOD and AOD shifter
plus that means ill get around to painting her sooner, which means the ninermobile will come to life sooner :w00t:

It's a good idea. Instead of going to the hassle of radical mods to your II, just build-up what you already have.
From your other posts, I'd say you are never getting into your Uncle's shop, nevermind any help he would give you. Family, you can't pick them.
Heck, you might even make some profit on the parts you bought.

well.. this thread has been sitting for a while, so its update time
ive ditched the ten holes, i now have some old cobra II five slots, getting the old tires onto the new rims soon
V8 conversion? bah, dont need it. im gonna make something special out of the 2.8L
i actually tried installing my glasspacks this past weekend... meticuloulsy took off all the clamps until i realized... the pipes are welded at the cats now i need to take it to a muffler shop and have THEM install it...
the good news is that the car is true dual exhaust until right after the cats, where it goes two into one pipe. so once i put on the sidepipes, it'll be great!
i get my license tomorrow so ill definately get to drive it more often.. and as soon as i figure out the media editing thing on ym computer, and as soon as i get the new exhaust on i can post the before/after sound clips
i revved it up to 6000 RPM without the new system, and it sounder kinda cool. and it didnt blow up either!!! lol, thats always a plus
and its not set in stone, but im working on making a custom blower setup. i figure, i can get an F150 lightning or harley takeoff for $200 or less, do some work with the accesory bracket and just make an adapter out of aluminum to put it onto my intake and it could be fun, so long as i keep the boost relatively low
and now, for some pics from the night of the almost install
oh and the 'rents said if i get a 4.0 GPA they'll pay for paint!!! WOOOO!!!!
