I prefer climbing than dropping down to a valley. Brakes get boring - though very important! lol
You can choose between roads that are: 'at speed' 4th gear where you're on/off in a rhythm, 3rd/2nd where you're L/R in the torque zone, or mostly 2nd at mid to higher rpm with intermittent 3rd for brief shots. This one was the latter.
Someone here posted about twisted sisters. IRIC. Maybe north of Austin? The pics were nice L/R over rolling hill hoop dehoops. Not many trees, kind of scrubbish.

I was thinking I had taken this highway many years ago in my British roadster, but it wound up this was the first time. To reach this hwy I detoured/dropped down from Tombstone Pass 4300' about a half hour to around 1500'. Then climbed 242 to McKenzie Pass 5300'.
The road was more narrow than most of OR 2L hwys that have a tiny 12" shoulder. No long travel trailers are allowed, and the few dually pickups with slide in campers that came down, made me feel like a cat rubbing his whiskers on the wall.
Thankfully, no one was in my way climbing and only passed like 6 vehicles that were coming down.
This was what I call a no b.s. hwy - 20 meant 20, 15 meant 15. I didn't push super hard because it was narrow, I was enjoying the view, rain made the road slippery. I did at first but they kept warning about peds and bicycles (saw one) and I didn't want to take out anyone in a blind corner/switchback as the road got tighter further up the climb. But it was fast enough for some big grins.
1. Heading up
2. Twist ahead
3. Twisty
4. Twistier

Lava field up top. (Think how old those scrub trees are growing in lava)
Lava lava everywhere.
Lava 'observatory'.

went on a couple roads like that up in the NC mountains. Saw an older Fusion in front of me ride so close to the rocks they had to scratch the side mirror and got soooo close to a truck in the other lane.

I don't know what I'd do with it over the winter. No way would I drive a low mile Mach 1 through the salt and snow. I could use something with 4WD too, but to me trucks just aren't any fun. I like to go fast, no haul stuff and drive through mud puddles.

Yeah, I wouldn't drive it in the snow at all. I have a couple home renovations planned, so having a truck will definitely help, yeah their not that much fun. Except for in the winter, seeing everybody else stuck on the side of the road

Those pictures are awesome, Charlie. Can't see that kind of scenery here in Texas. Makes me want to trip up there and drive the roads.
The twisted sisters are northwest of San Antonio I believe. I've looked them up, and the area is pretty typical of the hill country: scrub oaks, a little up-and-down. No major climbs or descents, just lots of left/rights. I'm going to drive them when I can. I'll bring my camera and get some pictures.
