I believe so.
It's been the opinion of the staff for a long time that they are distracting first and foremost. We are supposed to be exchanging information here though it seems all we really talk about is fake badges and wieners. But when you see the site on desktop its obviously far less cluttered and easier to scroll through. Plus I suppose this saves some bandwidth or something.
