Ok serious question for you guys. Drive her home and left her running. She's putting out 13.4 volts at the battery. Too low or is that normal for these cars? I know others had issues with under powered alternators. I do have the shaker 1000 and usually listen to my radio for about 20 minutes at lunchtime. Maybe I need to let her run for part of the time

Jill chances are you just have a bad battery. Just get a new one and keep on rollin. If it went all the way down once it's gonna do it again.

If it went down all at once it's most likely the alternator, wouldn't you say?

Nope. A bad battery will discharge completely just sitting there. If it drove all the way home and is showing over 13v the alt is probably ok. No guarantee but 9 out of 10 it's just a battery.

When the alternator went out on the Harley truck everything went dark and then the truck died

This is my second battery too. Stock one lasted three years and died while sitting in my car....at lunch....listening to the radio, lol. Guess I will have to let it run for a few minutes when i do that now. This one is two years old and has a 36 mo free warranty. I'm going to try to take it there (NTB) tomorrow and have them test it.

It may not have went all the way down, just far enough that it wouldn't crank. It may have a bad cell in it, it might crank 9 out of 10 times because its just on the cusp of holding enough of a charge. But leave the lights or the radio on for just a little too long and it wont crank. She'll know for sure with cold weather coming, that will expose a battery with a bad cell quickly.

If it was the alternator, it probably wouldn't have ran all the way home, it would have drained the battery and died. I don't know about these new cars, but on old cars you can unhook the battery with it running and drive it anywhere because the alternator is what is powering everything, the battery is just there to provide the initial start for the most part.

Yep. I always check that. I wipe my engine bay down every time i wash it and check that. My old Bronco, I used to keep a can of coke in it just in case I needed to clean the corrosion off.

Again. I love Jill.
Little trick for you people. Very hot water will take any battery corrosion off like magic.

I'll see what they say and then tomorrow my husband will test it himself anyway. He won't have anything to test it with until tomorrow.

I think it should read somewhere just over 14v at idle.

Is it a motorcraft? I read you said it was you second. I finally have up on getting motorcraft warranty replacements because a cell would go bad and then on the replacement too. Just get an interstate and be done with it.

It's happened to me on Seven and the old Expedition more than once.
