I would go to a car show or car meet but nowhere locally due to the fact I am in no mood to deal with people who behave like 2 year olds, so I can wait till I can get away to not run into anyone I actually know

You know Charlie, I'm a country boy and I hate to admit this, but horses scare the **** out of me. I love them, I think they are beautiful animals, but some of the things when I was little freaked me out. I just don't trust them, and with them being so ****ing big and powerful, they freak me out a little when I'm around them. The only thing in the back of my mind is "this ****** could kick the **** out of me before I knew what was happening, or trample me to death in and instant."
Don't know exactly why, but its just a fear I have. Kind of odd seeing as how I love them and respect them so much for the majestic animals they are.

It's pretty damm amazing how much we think alike Lee. There were a few behind a house we used to live in that would let me pet them when I was little. They were really cool. After that I never have been around a horse that I have felt comfortable around. Those suckers will stare you down like their looking into your soul. I was bit once in high school and never been on another one since. I've had a few stare me down then start acting annoyed by me being around. They probably just have a better sense of character than most people do. ![Big Grin](https://themustangsource.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

I think it boils down to communication. Humans expect animals to respond to our approaches, words, etc. But they don't communicate the same way. And if you're too abrupt initially, horses can take that as confrontational so the "fear or fight" takes over.
So I move slowly up to them and a bit submissive. Pause a few steps away and maybe turn sideways with a shoulder to them. Let them come to you. I had to learn to move slower than I usually do. And of course having a treat or nibble of something helps. Then pet the side of their neck first. Its where their momma used to nuzzle them and many horses don't want their face touched all the time. Two of my stallions get ticked off if you touch their face.
Plus they have a sixth sense. If there's a bit of fear, they sense our uneasiness and reply in kind. Same goes if there's a jerkwad abusive cowboy around. They pick up on that right away.
I have days were something inside of me is hesitant and the stallions pick up on that. I usually don't know what it is that brought it on (there's probably still some stuff from my stallion's sneak attack on me in 99). So we're both on edge. I usually just leave (after ending on a good note) and go mess with the mares or gelding that day. Then the next day everything is fine.
Then there's the eyesight thing. They can't see that well up close and they can't change their focus from distance to close like humans can. Their focus is more fixed where they have to move their head to see up close. That's why you have to move slow around them because if you move your hands too quickly, they may just see this blur and thinking something is going to hit them in the head, so they react to that.
So I've learned to speak slowly and softly and move slowly until communication is established.
As for kicking, if its a strange horse to me, I don't go around back. Even on my horses I always watch and then either move closely behind their rear (so the leg can't pick up speed), or far enough away that their extended kick can't reach me. And always talk to them when you move behind them so they know where you are.
Where I mainly have issues is inside a stall. Friends want to show me their horse sometimes and bring me in the stall. I feel waaay vulnerable. If the horse decides to turn jerk, there's no way out. So I don't like stalls at all. Fact I don't think horses should be kept in a barn. A 12 x 12 stall is like putting a dog in a dog crate and leaving it. (Besides, then you have to shovel everyday. lol) Horses need to run free in a pasture.
After you learn some communication and bond with them, they are really loveable - and they let you know it.

After reading posts about 14 year old car jackers, puppies tied to railroad tracks and destroyers hitting oil tankers I need a bit of this.
We might not agree 100% with all of them but they're pretty good overall.
