Yes.
I'm surprised too.
I was going to ask earlier if you were getting any detonation when it was running hot.

You're not 180 out are you? With the head off you could still have the piston tdc but not know where the cycle/valve train is - and that would have determined where the camshaft is.

The outer hub being off a little shouldn't cause any issues.

No harm no foul. At least I didn't do something stupid when it was like that. Next time I'll know better.
I should have trusted my eyes. I knew I had it right when I stabbed it but it was late at night and the timing light said the timing was off so I changed it.

Well I have an answer finally
Here you can see the the harmonic balance slid onto the crank. You can see the keyway and the dot for the camshaft sprocket line up like pics Al showed. The hb mark for TDC is at 12 I clock perfectly and the counter weight on the HB is at exactly 6 o clock as it should.
![Mustangs Coast to Coast-image-2862898793.jpg](https://themustangsource.com/forums/attachments/f864/117667d1458687757t-mustangs-coast-coast-image-2862898793.jpg)
So everything is good.
The problem is the timing point with the timing cover installed is at about the 11 o clock position.
That's how much it threw off my timing. So I was actually about 30 degrees before TDC when the truck was running. Holy crap!
I will remark TDC when I get it installed and then redo the tape.
So there it is. I've lost 6 quarts of oil, a timing cover gasket, head gaskets, head bolts, lower manifold gasket, header gaskets, and ruined my valve cover gaskets to find this out. When all I really needed to do was see this while I was assembling.
Reassembly begins tomorrow. Thinking of getting some me heads. Supposedly trick flow 170s will work with stock pistons and stock hydraulic cam and with my headers and edelbrock lower intake. So I'll have to think about that tonight. I dot ever want to open this engine up again. If I want aftermarket heads now is the time or never.

I will clean the old gasket and check the block for warpage with a straight edge and feeler gauge before I start putting it back together.
Anything else I should check?
I don't like the amount of deflection on the timing chain but it's within 1/2" maximum specs according to Haynes manual at about 7/16".

And lastly this is what all the cylinder look like.
This goldfish color forms a line where the detonation occurred according to the timing I had. When I had it installed my incorrect TDC was happening at this line on every cylinder. It's about 5/16" tall. All the way around the cylinder
On every one. Cylinder walls look great and I've rubbed some motor oil on them to keep them from corroding in the air in the garage tonight.
Pushrods were all true. Which I'll had to replace anyway with new heads. And if a valve got
damaged I door know but new heads would make that a moot point too.
