Go to the store where you got the ring and sweet talk one of the ladies at that counter to help you out. Chances are they would without any hesitation (because they are chicks and into this kinda stuff, no offense Jill 
) Figure out when you and your girl will go in there "shopping" or looking around, go ahead of time, and take a note that says something sweet on it to her, but at the end have it say will you marry me or turn around or something.
Setup: You and your girl go in the store to look, talk to the girl you have arrangements with, after a few minutes of browsing, arrange for her to be like "Oh i got sometihng I think you'll love in the back, one second while i go get it." girl leaves counter goes to back to get note. As she is gone, kneel down to be tieing your shoe (make sure you wear shoes with laces) and when girl returns with note for your g/f, pop out ring and wait for her to turn around.
Sounded good in my head.
How i did it, was, I was at the store when my wifes engagement ring was made (by a forum member here btw ) I took pics while he made it and then that night, i was sitting with my now wife, flipping through the pictures being like "isnt this cool to see a ring made" and stuff. Then when done, i was like "you should see how it turned out" she said something like "i bet it was pretty or whatever" and then i brought the ring out and said see for yourself and then popped the question.

In my honest opinion, for me it would be all about what is said when asking. It's the words behind it that mean the most. Every girl wants to feel really special, so speak from the heart. Is she the type that will need all of the fancy stuff that goes along with it?
