Darcman might be on to something. According to my 2019 GT Owner's Manual under track use (pg 248):
5.0L: Prior to the track event, drain the
engine oil, replace the oil filter and
change the engine oil to 5W-30. After
the track event, drain the engine oil,
replace the oil filter and refill the engine
oil with 5W-20. I would assume that using the 5w-30 during track use would offer better lubrication because of the hard use usually seen on a track.

So 5w30 might provide better protection during track use, but my comment above was all related to warranty coverage.
I was a Ford Service Advisor for 9+ years. I've had to ask people for oil change receipts.

And the Track Pack as well as PP1 cars of the newer vintage feature 5W-50 oil due to better film strength and thus better protection during hard use. Fact that they also have oil coolers further promotes thicker oil.
I have used W20 and W30 interchangeably for years in my other cars. Do what you think is best. It's your engine.

Second the Pennzoil Platinum recommendation. I have a V-6, so I went with the plain Platinum rather than the Ultra. Walmart sells both products at incredibly reasonable prices. My previous oil change I went with Mobil 1, recommended by the service place I used. I was shocked at how quickly the oil life remaining indicator plummeted on Mobil 1. After about 4000 miles, it was down to 10%! So, after reading that Pennzoil Platinum had a reputation for keeping engines clean, I switched to that. I've now put about 4000 miles on that, and the indicator says I still have 53% remaining. The oil on the dipstick still looks clear and clean. So, I'll be sticking with Pennzoil Platinum from now on.

That higher viscosity also means there is a bit higher friction, which reduces the fuel efficiency (and also the power output) a little bit.
For normal duty, when the oil is not going to get that hot, and you are not putting those extreme loads on the engine components, the "20" should be fine.

I'm talking about warranty coverage, you're talking about what's better for track use.
I voided my warranty a long time ago when I installed the Whipple.
Doesn't mean that I can't offer advise to others on how to keep their warranty coverage.

Mobil is a brand of oil.

. . . . I was shocked at how quickly the oil life remaining indicator plummeted on Mobil 1. After about 4000 miles, it was down to 10%! I've now put about 4000 miles on that, and the indicator says I still have 53% remaining. . . . . .
So my guess is, there had to be something else going on -- for example if the 4000 miles on Mobil 1 was over the winter, I think it might have been tripped by the elapsed time (I think it recommends an oil change every six months? I have noticed this when I take my car out of storage in the spring)
If anyone knows different about the oil life meter, please correct, thanks

I'm too lazy to look it up but I used to always use AmSoil. When I bought my Boss they didn't offer 5-50 so I use Ford synthetic 5-50.

Welcome to the forums, you proliferic poster you!

In regards to the higher weight oil you recommend... the problem with that is temperature, use and engine design may not like it and may in fact reduce your MPG. I'm sure everyone cares about that MPG these days with Premium gas bein' what it is...![Dunno](https://themustangsource.com/forums/images/smilies/dunno.gif)
In any event, 30 is one thing... and even then it's extremely circumstantial and may actually be harmful... but 50 is right out. The variable cam phaser system won't like it, and the engine will have to work harder to pump that oil around... and if it can't get the oil around, then your engine will die, horribly. Tolerances of the bearings, pump, all of it are not going to like that 50 weight.
Also food for thought: after takin' apart my 4.6 3v, which is admittedly not exactly the same as the 5.0 Coyote but similar enough, and seeing what regular use of synthetic 5w20 changed every 5000 miles on a daily driver at 183K at the time? Yeah. 5w20 is perfectly fine and called for in these engines. My engine was dang near perfect in every way. Stupid plastic timing covers and bad tensioners is the design problems, not oiling. The car is still runnin' strong to this day, so far, and while I wound up getting a beater Caliber to run around (it was too good to pass on), she's only got to 186K now. Still, that engine was excellent inside there. For what that's worth.
But you do you. And I hope you don't experience issues. Good luck!

Well what motor are we talking about? Because I know in 2021 ford switched their recommended oil for the 5.0 to 5w30 and in fact my oil fill cap says 5w30 from the factory. 5w50 is what the gt500s are running but many coyote drivers are switching to it as well…. And I do see the temp concern if you’re living in a area where it gets severely cold … but for these high performing motors it needs that extra viscosity. I think even 5w30 is too light for these motors to be honest
