i have a ? regarding track wheels and trackey

when you get the trackey it asks for tire/wheel size to be input when loading the trackey

if switching to say an 18 in track set up, what will that do to the trackey performance

as far as wheels, i like the brembo wheel and it comes in black thru ford racing

It won't change anything with Track Key performance, but it will change your speedo reading depending on the diameter of the tire you use. If your rear 18" tire is the same diameter as the factory 19" (27" diameter), then you will not notice any difference. If your 18" tire is smaller in diameter than factory, which is most likely going to happen, then you will actually be going slower than what your speedo is reading. It's almost like changing your rear axle gear ratio.

HI all,
I have a similar question. I have been doing track days for 6 years with an E36 M3, and last year bought the GT/Brembos. Running the car completely stock last year to get a feel for the set up. I really dislike the OEM Pirellis, and found that while they were certainly better than what I was running on my M3, I found them to be terrrible after a my second track day. I have replaced the tires with Conti DWS tires (245/45/19) for everyday driving (I live in Maryland and need to deal with light snow on occassion). Now I need a summer package that will work well for the track.

So many decisions! 18 vs 19, staggered vs standard. What wheel size on what size tires?? I am thinking of the RE11 (or possibly AD08), as these have had great reviews. But my question is what size tires and what wheel size should be used with the tires. So ...

Questions:
18" v. 19"?
255/255 v. 285/285 v. 255/285?
Wheel size?
255 -> 9"
285-> 10.5"?

Thanks for any help.

Rich

Nice to see another Marylander on here, are you part of the SCCA and do the track days at Summit? Great choice on the DWS's by the way. I think staggered is where you will want to be, the Boss is set to 255 front and 285 rear, apparently squaring the tires up would cause understeer unless you put a larger sway in the front. The fronts are 9 and the backs are 9.5 I believe so a 285 will fit on a 9.5 but I think it will also fit on a 10 inch rim, and that would give you the option of going bigger. I personally would go with 18's since you have a better choice and cheaper choice of tire, and if you go with a nice rim it should drop you about 15 lbs a wheel, that is if the stock rims are around 35 lbs. That's 60 lbs saved of unsprung and rotational mass.

HI Brandon,
Not part of SCCA yet, as it was difficult to figure out what it would do for me. We have been going to Summit for quite a while, love Shenendoah! Starting to really get my lap times down now that I am driving with 21st century technology. Went to VIR this past year and just loved it, very quick track, especially compared to Summit Point.

The DWS's got great reviews on TireRack, and I had them on the bimmer. They really performed well. Chose these tires as this car is my daily driver and I wanted something that would also be comfortable. The track tires I want to get will provide the performance.

Thanks for the feedback. With all the advantages of the 18", I wonder why Ford decided to put 19" on the GT and the Boss. 18" could also help when I lower the suspension next year. The price and weight are also a big issue. Also trying to understand the best rim size for each tire, so that you get maximum wear, but minimum rollover. This is something that I am struggling with. Guess if I go with 255/285/18 with RE11's that should be a nice setup.

I would join just because the fee per year isn't horrible and then you have access to their track days with instructors. Though I have heard some people prefer NASA because the SCCA instructors can be asses, which I have been lucky never to get. I think Ford put the 19's on the cars because it looks silly with the suspension setup from factory running on 18's. Probably also because they partnered with Pirelli and those were the tires they provided.

Can you post the link for the application and the schedule? I would be curious to see it. With FATT at Summit Point, TrackDaze, and PCA (I am an honorary member, which gets me more options for track days, like Watkins Glen), I am pretty full, although no one has Thunderbolt this year.

Definitely go with an 18 for the track as 19s have very limited offerings and will cost you a lot more $$. The Enkei PF01 is about the best bang for the buck in a lightweight wheel that fits the Mustang and clears the Brembos. The price is around $350 per wheel. You can run the 18 x 9.5 35mm offset square, or run those on the front and the 18 x 10.5 47mm offset rear if you prefer staggered. They're available in silver or matte black and weigh 20 lbs in the 9.5 and 21 lbs in the 10.5.

As far as tires you can run NT01s, 555RIIs, R888s, RA1s, R6s or Conti takeoff slicks among others in an R-compound and virtually anything mentioned above and then some in a street compound.
