Luckily, I just missed out on the draft lottery sweepstakes by only 2 years !

All joking aside ! It really sucked that AMC went under, as they did build some really fantastic cars, including the Javelin, Scrambler and AMX

Your probably going to laugh your butt off, but my first car was a 71 Chevy Vega notchback, but for only a $200.00 car ! I got 3-4 good years out of it lol.

Now you see them popping around at car cruises with 350 Chevy crate motors in them.. Who would've ever thought they'd end up becoming known as the poor man's Camaro

That poor mans Camaro is bringing some pretty serious money from the collectors these days, especially if you have the Cosworth Vega.

See that ! I knew that I should've held onto that car, as I could of transformed that Vega into a Cosworth edition clone

They still aren't very popular though. Now the Nova on the other hand is ridiculous. A 66-67 2dr is fetching all kinds of crazy money. You can't buy a decent shell for under $10k. And it's a crappy little car but it makes for a great hot rod.

Your right on the money Al ! As you see those 66-67 Nova's fetching big money on Barrett-Jackson and Mecum quite often

Most of the Vegas rusted away, and the rest of them (along with the Pintos) were gutted and demolished on various dirt tracks around the Southeast.

I always loved how the Vega got a reputation for rusting. As if just about everything made during that era didn't rust like crazy. Find me an original road driven (no museum trailer queens) sixties era muscle car with no rust and I'll find you a muscle car that isn't original. lol

I learned how to weld, fabricate, correctly use wrenches etc..., hanging out at the shop.

Not trying to be sarcastic... but are there really correct and incorrect ways to use a wrench?

I should send that rust bucket Yenko Nova that I see once in awhile, your way! :-)

Or under torquing. Or not using gloves and then using a wrench while you have sweat or oil on your hands. The next thing you know you're staring at a bloody knuckle or sliced open hand.

Exactly ! As it wasn't just the Vega that had such a bad reputation for rusting.. Everything coming from Detroit during that era turned into rustbuckets..

But then again, most of these cars were also driven year round, as front wheel drive technology didn't exist back then unless you were fortunate enough to own both a 4x4 pickup and a muscle car

I doubt it. The COPO was a production race car and the Nova was barely a sports car. Even the SS was only a small block and not built well. Think Yenko only did one after 68. The baby nova really was a POS and still is until you replace the front cradle and reinforce the rest of the body.

Just drainage issues. Sealed quarters and doors at the bottom that just held water in the corners. Plus the steel was cheap. I'm amazed looking at the 50's big fender cars and how well the original sheet metal still holds up compared to the 60's cars. A lot of the 50's cars didn't have an inner layer welded to the quarters.
