I sometimes remember the 60's (flashbacks!) Fast cars, fast girls! But as the 70's ushered in, for the only time in my life I was hoping that I wouldn't win the lottery! I remember the envelope from the Selective Service congratulating me on my 18th birthday, and asking me to come down to the local draft board to see if I had won an all expense paid trip to beautiful, exotic Southeast Asia!

Now you see them popping around at car cruises with 350 Chevy crate motors in them.. Who would've ever thought they'd end up becoming known as the poor man's Camaro

Your probably going to laugh your butt off, but my first car was a 71 Chevy Vega notchback, but for only a $200.00 car ! I got 3-4 good years out of it lol.

They still aren't very popular though. Now the Nova on the other hand is ridiculous. A 66-67 2dr is fetching all kinds of crazy money. You can't buy a decent shell for under $10k. And it's a crappy little car but it makes for a great hot rod.

Most of the Vegas rusted away, and the rest of them (along with the Pintos) were gutted and demolished on various dirt tracks around the Southeast.
I always loved how the Vega got a reputation for rusting. As if just about everything made during that era didn't rust like crazy. Find me an original road driven (no museum trailer queens) sixties era muscle car with no rust and I'll find you a muscle car that isn't original. lol

I should send that rust bucket Yenko Nova that I see once in awhile, your way! :-)

But then again, most of these cars were also driven year round, as front wheel drive technology didn't exist back then unless you were fortunate enough to own both a 4x4 pickup and a muscle car

I doubt it. The COPO was a production race car and the Nova was barely a sports car. Even the SS was only a small block and not built well. Think Yenko only did one after 68. The baby nova really was a POS and still is until you replace the front cradle and reinforce the rest of the body.
Exactly ! As it wasn't just the Vega that had such a bad reputation for rusting.. Everything coming from Detroit during that era turned into rustbuckets..
