IMHO the design team did an outstanding job as the S550 is still completely recognizable as a Mustang but it's most definitely not retro..
The 05-14 models were intentionally designed by Ford as a modern interpretation (retro) of the 1st generation 65-70 Mustangs where as the new S550 clearly is not !

Well, according to the ford design teams, the grille is inspired by the 68, interior by 67, roofline and taillights by the 67 and 69 fastbacks, hips from 69 and the headlights to the original mustang. I personally think it looks more retro than s197, but it also is a more modern look at the same time. Takes a great team to get that right and they did.
They aren't anything like the '69. Maybe the '68. lol Even still the most recent mustang had hips... so now we can reference that! lol
The back may appear as more retro, however the entire car is completely an all modern design altogether..

That being said, aren't all Mustangs retro? Trying to relate styles to the past?
Fox Body "Fast-Back" shape, 1996 Vertical tailligts, 2001 Hood & Side Scoops, 2005 Headlights, 2010 Rear Fender Bulges, 2015 entire Rear section.
I think all Mustangs are"Retro"... some just capture the Mustang vibe better than others.
I 100% agree though that they superseded themselves by making it look Mustang, even with a Global theme.

Merrian Webster Dictionary defines "Retro" as "looking like or relating to styles or fashions from the past".

Like I've said before, the 2015 is a thoroughly modern car with distinct Mustang DNA. No one would dare call a 2015 Porsche 911 Retro. The thing that made the 2005-09 Mustang and to a sightly lesser extent the 2010-14 Mustang "Retro" was the fact that Ford had gotten so far from Classic Mustang Design and Proportions that when they went back to those Proportions and reintegrated the Classic Mustang Styling Cues it could be called nothing but Retro. Now Ford is simply picking back up on the Mustang's DNA and giving us a Fresh Modern Designed Mustang.

Retro, modern, metro, rodern...it's all in the eye of the...uh, looker. I guess one can behold the beauty in a car as one beholds the beauty in, say, Diane Kruger...regardless, it depends on what catches your eye. The front of the car is decidedly modern. I don't care what they say inspired the look, it doesn't in any way to me look retro. The tail lights scream 1st-gen Mustang. Can't look at those and see anything else, and they're much more reminiscent than the '05-'14 tail lights. Now, as far as overall design, when the '05 came out, it generated excitement in me for a modern Mustang. I couldn't stand the Fox bodies or the SN95 styles. I know, that makes me a criminal to some, but that's just me. I think the '05-'09 Mustang is now and will be for a long time one of the best looking designs for a car I've ever seen, and when properly and tastefully modded, is truly a gorgeous car.
I dont see "mustang" (AT ALL) when I see a fusion- but the fusion influence is pretty unmistakable in the 15, so, to me the 15 is more retro to a late model fusion than its namesake.
just a opinion
hope it sells well, but looks-wise just not my cup of tea. afraid my trips to the ford dealer are done, out of room here anyways- 4 mustangs in my favorite body styles is enough. another favorite might come along, but for me it wont be in a '15 wrapper.

The 2015 GT can beat the 2013 BOSS 302: What’s impressive is that the 2015 Mustang GT is said–according to the same interview with Dave Pericak–to have the speed and quickness to beat the 2012-2013 Boss 302 around the track.
The 2015 GT uses parts from the BOSS 302: In fact, the new GT has many of the same parts internally as the Boss 302, a on a lighter, shorter and wider platform. Even if the GT receives only a mild bump in horsepower when compared to the S197 Coyotes, there will undoubtedly be a significant performance upgrade over the 2014s, you’ll just have to look past simple power ratings to see it.
Independent Rear Suspension and a new front suspension: With that aside, back to talking about the IRS. Early in the car’s development, it became clear to the Ford engineers that the front suspension they’d borrowed from the 2014 Mustang GT was not going to be able to keep up with the abilities of the new IRS. This called for a redesign of the front suspension geometry that resulted in a double ball joint and full subframe construction in the front of the car. This, according to Ford, has resulted in a more precise, accurate feel and improved all-around handling.
Exact Horsepower Numbers: As of right now, the unconfirmed numbers have the EcoBoost 4 cylinder at 305HP, the V6 dialed down to 300HP and the GT somewhere in the range of 435HP from the factory. Like the weight specs, these numbers have not been confirmed by Ford, but have surfaced in a number of rumors and mentions lately. Like the car’s weight, they’re still getting these numbers finalized before making news.

just watched both of the 'walkaround' videos, the interior looks great- but personally I think the late model steering wheel looked better than anything anywhere... the new one looks kinda bulky/busy...the door panels are beautiful.
I think both the yellow and silver cars are just screaming for some stripes- the light color over the rather undefined quarter panel flare area makes the quarters seem like a empty canvas...even a pinstripe over the hip line, or a blacked out lower trimline I think would add a lot. personally think ford shoulda defined the flare with a line- maybe not as sharp as the 05 arch, but just 'something' to make it look less balloonlike... the front fender definition is much better in my opinion, the rear just looks as bland as the camaro's quarter flare to me.
I have a feeling a lot of these lighter color cars may have optional blackout/striping options to give more contrast/definition to the rear quarters, lower front and rear fascias- just to get away from the monochromatic areas/accent some of the more subtle details that can hide in lighter colors. the car has a lot of subtle contours that might make for a whole new set of stripe themes to follow...
one of my least favorite lines on the 05 was the hockeystick, just because to me it puts the lines at odds with the old Boss302 stripes... still seen some that carried it well, but still think without the hockeystick it woulda been perfect... cant see a boss302 stripe on the 15 without a lot of basic changes- but with more sweepback, and the straight lower crease, betcha someone will re-invent it to follow the new lines.
one of my least favorite things on the 15 is a tiny thing- the lower rear window corners mean sportslats will never work out...I still never saw a set that were perfect for the 05-09, but the ones on the PJ Saleen were pretty close... water under the bridge I know...time marches on, but "I fear change"
