I dunno what civic you were driving....but every honda i've driven with vtec feels like a slug until you rev it past 4500 rpms and vtec kicks in

the stang is too...but it is A LOT faster than a civic even under 2500 rpm lol

just install a grapefruit shooter tail pipe on and you will like your in the honda again...

all seriousness..

if you hit the gas in 5th gear when doing 40, no the car doesnt pull as hard as if you hit the gas in 2nd @ 40.. no car will.. you honda had very short gears which made it "feel faster" plus the car being lighter.. the stang is deceptivly quiet.. and 9-10 your going faster than you think you are..

put an exhaust on her..

FTR.. i've never seen a STOCK honda run 12.5's.. just sayin..

my 2012 gt/cs feels slow until i look down at the speedo and im doing 95. i have the 3:73's and love the feel. now my 2006, i have 3:55's and it feels like i have to push it to get it to go fast but i still have the same feeling even though im doing 95. both cars handle well and feel smooth at 95, its just the getting there that is the difference.
not trying to be mean on this next statement but if you want to feel torque then buy a rocket ship...i hear they have more torque than anything else you can imagine.

in seriousness, my escape can feel faster than the mustang at times, but again it goes back to gears. and my little ol escape is a I4.
its how well the car is built. it is very deceptive. very fast. faster than you would expect. the civic feels faster because its smaller.

I have to admit mine seems slow too. When I look down and see 100+ mph I think "Gee this seems rather slow!"

It's the size and mass of the car that makes it seem like it's going slow, plus the civic is like a go-kart - seems fast but is barely moving faster than the speed of smell.

Good example, I fly the Boeing 747, now during take off when I am doing 180 mph prior to lift off it seems waaaaay to slow. Now when I fly something smaller that lifts off at 90 mph it seems faster than a 747.

Oh and don't worry about gas - half the fun is seeing how quickly you can use it up

Will,

I think there are a couple of factors that are to your detriment when it comes to this car. First, it sounds like despite your interest in the mustang, you're not all that knowledgeable about cars. I conclude this both from the nature of your question and your response that since your civic was an automatic it shifted at 3k rpms. If you gave it more gas, it would most definitely shift at a higher rpm, as the civic doesn't have a CVT transmission.

But there's nothing wrong with coming onto a forum and looking for answers when you don't know the answers. So I'm going to tell you right off the bat that there's nothing at all wrong with your car. I will also tell you that the motor in your mustang, like the 6.2L V8 in several Mercedes AMG cars, is a high revving motor. Both of these are designed to be performance motors and designed to be revved. They are designed for top end performance at the detriment of low end grunt. That's how most naturally aspirate performance motors, especially those with a low displacement and high level of hp are designed (like the mustang motor or even the current M3).

I had a buddy of mine who bought a 2007 e63 AMG who had the same exact complaint. He came from a CLK 500 which had a more standard motor with a more even torque distribution. One is a performance motor and one isn't. I have to be honest, it annoyed me when he was complaining about the car because he clearly didn't realize that one of the best parts of a V8 like the one in his car is that the motor was designed to rev all day long. He clearly wanted a cruiser and should have just gotten an E550. It sounds like you're in the same boat. Did you even drive the car before purchasing it? The coyote motor is designed for the mustang, unlike previous motors that were derived from regular sedans and trucks where the torque curve needed to focus on low and mid-range grunt.

The gears in your car are another problem. They're are magnifying the issue and making the car seem even slower, as the rpms at a given speed are far lower than they would be if you got a lower gear ratio for the rear end.

I'm not sure that swapping gears is going to solve your problem. You seem to have an issue with actually revving the car at all and a different rear end will make it rev quicker. I think you simply need another car as it's clear that a performance motor like that in the mustang doesn't fit with your driving style. I bet you'd be more happy with something like VW GTI or Mazdaspeed 3 which has a great torque at ~2k rpms, but falls on its face at over 5k rpms. Or maybe a crown vic would be more your speed? I'd go for the Mercury Marauder if I was doing it though.

thanks for the info. so you're saying I should always try to keep the rev range around 5k unless I'm cruising on the highway right.

I normally shift at 3000+ rpm in the lower gears.....unless I am testing the tranny for issues.

It's not that you necessarily need to always keep the revs high - just, if you're planning on having some fun, you're going to need to rev it out. All the good stuff happens between 5000-7000 RPM, anyways

My 2008 GT would spin the tires if I tried to roll on the throttle at 2000 RPM. In my 2011, I was able to absolutely pin the throttle, and at about 5000 RPM, the back end would suddenly let go. It's all about where the powerband gets meaty.

I have a Honda Element for my DD. It is geared even shorter than the Civic (horrible MPG). It feels very quick, a lot of that is lack of sound deadening. But in the time it takes to get to 40 in the Honda, I am doing 90 in the Boss.

I also think you get spoiled very quickly. There's a reason people catch the performance mod bug.

Thumbs down

Not to be a jerk, but almost every post you have ever made on this forum is a complaint about something being broken or wrong on your car.
So...you're either jmatero back under a pseudo-name, some other troll, or you just happened to get the worst built car from Ford in the past decade? I have a hard time believing it's the third of those options.

I think he's just a young guy with his first V8 that doesn't know very much about cars. I was suspect about Will at the start but I think he's legit.
