Hello golfaholic,

My name is Deysha with Ford Customer Service. If this happens again, please make an appointment with your Ford dealership as you stated. Then message me with your mileage, VIN, dealer, and contact info so that I can escalate this for you.

I took my car in and surprisingly this is what the service advisor said
"oh perfectly normal, the engine is searching for compression".....

Ok give me my car back now!

I've had this issue several times myself, maybe 8 times in the 7 months that I've had it.
When it happens it makes me worry there's something wrong, but if you read the manual it seems like it's working as intended.

The manual says it may take 10 seconds to crank.
Here's what it reads right out of our manual...
"2. Turn the key to 4 (start), then
release the key as soon as the
engine begins cranking. Your vehicle
has a computer assisted cranking
system that assists in starting the
engine. After releasing the key from
the 4 (start) position, the engine may continue cranking for up to
10 seconds or until the vehicle starts."

So maybe we have nothing to worry about?

Hmmm interesting. I start the car like a "normal" car - turn the key to start and hold until it catches, then release.
I'll try the above (release the key as soon as it begins cranking) to see how that goes.

I guess it's the way these systems are designed electronically to keep going until the motor starts. If I take my hand off the key it will continue to turn over until I turn the key off and try again. Today I had the issue twice and on the 3rd attempt the car started fine. It's almost as if there is no fuel delivery during the failed startup attempts.

I'm going to try to recreate this a few times checking to make sure I hear the fuel pump kick in as I turn the key forward. I did a search on this issue and couldn't find a thing on it. Since it's difficult to recreate(it's only happened 5 times or so) it may be hard to get the dealer to track down the issue.
Turn the key to the ON position and listen for the fuel pump before actually trying to start the car. If you don't hear the fuel pump, or if it sounds odd. You might have an issue there.

Otherwise, it is normal. My 09 Focus used to do it once in a very great while (once a year maybe?) It'll stop trying eventually so as not to burn out the starter but I never had it not start, just took it a bit longer than usual. I figured it was a bit of water in the fuel lines. Usually occurred if I went longer than 6-8 months without putting a bottle of Techron through the system.
