Its a similar debate as to when the millenium began... ordinal or cardinal...

The oldest dating systems were in regnal years, and considered the date as an ordinal, not a cardinal number. For example, a monarch could have a first year of rule, a second year of rule, a third, and so on, but a zero year of rule would be nonsense. Applying this ancient epoch system to modern calculations of time, which include zero, is what led to the debate over when the third millennium began.

As a side-note to the debate on timing of the "turning of the millennium", the arbitrariness of the era itself can be raised. Mathematically, the choice of the zero point on any timeline is an arbitrary one. (However, once chosen, it must be abided.)
It has long been established by Ford - by its previous anniversary years - that 2014 is Mustang's 50th anniversary.

In the end,
In the TV series, The X-Files, there is an episode titled "Millennium", continuing the TV series of the same name. In this episode Dr. Scully mentions that the new Millennium doesn't start until January 1, 2001. She is made fun of, but not suggested to be incorrect. Mulder responds, "No one likes a math geek, Scully."

Again, the past isn't going to dictate what happens this time around. The 50th anniversary is a big deal, and should be treated as such. Ford knows this, and won't disappoint.

Wouldn't it be cool if the second half of the Mustang century started with an all new platform?

I agree, and all the 2014 1/2 mustangs can be called 2015

When's the last time Ford had a half model year? They'll just round it up.

The 25th Vette was 1978 and their 50th was 2003.

Why did Ford screw up with the 89s, 99s, 04s, and 09s?

Personally I think it should be a 2015 model ready to ship on April 17 2014.

It was my understanding that the unveiled model was labeled as a 1964 1/2, but all the production models were 1965s. They were released mid-April 1964 though, so I would expect a mid-April 2014 release as a 2015 model year car.
