I would like to see a high quality auto as an option, manual could remain standard but it doesn't hurt to have options. It will be interesting to see how many sign up for an auto ZL1 but they are expecting 1/2 the buyers - these could be potential GT500 buyers who want an auto.

I have driven some really strong muscle cars with automatics, get a good stall converter and shift kit and they are a blast to drive. Easy to use in traffic and for daily driving but a beast when needed.

If an auto was on the option sheet, I for one would check it.

No. My skill level on the track isn't to the point where I push hard enough to get it to stove temp yet, but I'm working on it. When I lived in Colorado we'd do the manifold thing on hunting and Jeep trips.

HAHA!!
It is us "older guys" that grew up with MT's and still know how to drive them. Take your MT car to discount tire and you have to pull it into the bay for them because the zit faced tire monkey doesnt know how to shift a stick

yep happens every time!!! especially younger kids have no idea about it...some don't even know they exist...it's sad and I think everybody needs to learn to drive one...atleast enough to get from A-B...because half the kids that know how to drive one really don't know how to drive one at all...if that makes sense for you

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Getrag

In 2001, Getrag and Ford Motor Company entered a 50:50 joint venture known as Getrag Ford Transmissions to develop and manufacture transmissions. Getrag recently entered into two new supply deals with Ford to produce the Dual Clutch PowerShift Transmission at new plants in America (Irapuato, Mexico) and the other in Asia Pacific (in Nanchang, Ganzhou and Yudu, China). Production will begin in 2009 for Ford and then an additional DCx volume out of Mexico in 2010. The headquarters for the new division, Getrag Transmissions Corporation (GTC), is located in Sterling Heights, Michigan. The dual clutch transmission (DCT) combines the advantages of a manual and an automatic transmission, and is more energy efficient than either. Shifting between gears will be unnoticeable to passengers. Two main versions will be produced: an oil-bathed "wet" multi-plate clutch version which utilises hydraulic fluid for shifting, and a "dry" single-plate clutch version which uses electronic motors to control the transmission.

Over the years how many cars equipped with automatics have worn the Shelby name? I honestly don't know and that's why I'm asking.

I know in the most recent no GT500's have and only 200 Shelby GT's have.

I really don't see a problem with it. With a good operating auto, it should be faster in the 1/4 and with a responsive tap shift, it should be faster on a road course. Clutching and shifting wastes lots of time when racing. Fastest way from A to B is what I'm looking at. Maybe not as fun to drive but faster on the tracks.

A part-time subcontractor told me about his brother's all-out new Corvette (Z06 or something like that) with the automatic. I inquired as to why he would spend so much on a supercar without a manual - he told me his brother has a bum leg and can barely get in and out let alone push a clutch - so yes, I would say there is a potential market being missed... enough to justify having it? Who knows?

Sounds like they should put it in a Boss instead. Then maybe they wouldn't need the Track Key.

Too late. Shelby already saw it and trademarked it. If you use it again you will have to pay him for it. As a matter of fact it's retroactive so you should just pay him now for everytime you thought it in your head.

Well, Ford has a 6-speed auto in the 2011+ SuperDuty diesel pickups that handles 400+ hp and 800+ ft-lb of torque just fine, so apparently they could make a transmission that could handle the GT500's torque, which is nowhere near 800 ft-lbs

And I think they should.

There's a member on here I recently saw go from a 2011 5.0 to a GT500 then back to a 5.0 automatic so him and his wife could drive/enjoy the car.

He'd probably have gotten an automatic GT500 if given the option originally, and not lose more money trading the GT500 in after only a few months just to get an automatic trans in a lower-power car.

.
