Most Mustang reference books show the engine code for Boss 429 Mustangs as "Z". But, several have a different engine code in their VIN. What is that code and why?

There is no C code.

Only F,G,H,L,M,Q,R,S,T, and Z.

BA is correct, the 429CJ, SCJ, and "C" code 429 didn't come out in Mustangs until 1971...

As a hint it is in his list above.

Early Boss 429s were converted "Q" code 428CJ cars. The complete cars were delivered from Ford to Kar Kraft for conversion, and part of the process on these early cars was yanking out a perfectly good 428CJ engine and replacing with the Boss 429 powerplant.

Next question: Prior to production of the 2001 Bullitt, a prototype show car was built. Where was this prototype Bullitt built?

You are half right. It was built for the LA Auto show, but was built at a well known shop closer to Ford corporate headquarters. (hint)
