that is a surprising high # for 67 models.. must have been a lot of unused 390`s at ford .. 69 390 mustangs are strange as why would you not go with the 428 if you had a choice of big motors.. more a straight up question than a trivia one .. could you get the 428 in a none cobra jet model

In Mustangs, the '67 and '68 Shelby GT-500 had a 428 PI (non CJ) engine. These were the only Mustangs that had non-CJ 428s in them. You could also get non CJ-428s in several other car lines like the Galaxie (7 Litre), Mercury (Marauder, etc.). 428s were also substituted for hard to come by 427s in many "427" Cobras.

Let me give it a try. I don't know if this is easy or not... here goes.
Everyone's familiar with fords 390 - 428 big block motor. Ford called this the "FE" block.
3 parts to the question; What does "FE" stand for? When did it start production in what displacement?

I've seen 3 different explanations:
Ford-Edsel
Ford Engine
and FE as in the Periodic symbol for iron.
I believe I read on Fomoco.com that Ford Engine was actually correct as supplied by one of the original engineers.

How to grade this??? both of you are right.
Hoss got the year and original displacement, BTW in '58 it was also in a 361 CID for the Edsel only. According to Ford documents and engineers FE was for Ford Engine. How original. I always liked the Ford - Edsel answer though. Makes for good trivia!
So I guess Hoss got 2/3 and mgreene was 1/3.
Hoss, your up!
