Third Shelby Mustang: Shelby GT Joins GT-H and GT500!

Shelby Automotive will offer a third Shelby Mustang to fill the gap between the 300 horsepower Mustang GT and 500 horsepower Shelby GT500.

The Shelby GT--produced at Shelby Automotive in Las Vegas--is essentially the same package as the rental-only Hertz Shelby GT-H.

With its trademark gold-on-black color scheme and exterior modifications including a unique hood, Mustang GT/CS front fascia, and side scoops, the Shelby GT-H can be mistaken for no other car on the road. Ford Racing provided suspension and performance modifications improving the car's handling and increasing horsepower to 325 and torque to 330. The Shelby GT is expected to share many of the same characteristics.

Unlike the Hertz edition, the Shelby GT will be available to the public for purchase at local Ford dealers.

More info coming soon!

I guess the Hertz guys can go ahead and rent them now! They aren't going to be as rare as they thought.

Geez, they were licking their chops, weren't they. Imagine the prices you were going to have to pay for a ragged out AUTOMATIC GT-H. Now, maybe you'll have the opportunity get a STICK GT and in something other than black...

I'm sure the price will be pretty high, too.

I'll just build my own car the way I want it.

I will always applaud more choices but at what cost? The prices just keep going up and up and the guys and gals that would really enjoy these cars to drive are kept out of the market. Maybe I'm just putting the cart before the horse but look at the prices of some of the Saleens!!

Shelby Mustang coming this year

Detroit News staff

Ford Motor Co. is joining forces again with racing legend Carroll Shelby to produce a new high-performance Ford Mustang that will hit dealerships later this year.

Ford announced the new vehicle to dealers at meetings in Las Vegas this week. The automaker plans to formally announce the new Shelby Mustang next week in its online documentary that can be viewed on www.myboldmoves.com.

"We are working on the next new Shelby," Ford spokesman Jim Cain said. "We want to announce it in our Bold Moves documentary so we are keeping our cards close to the vest for now."

With few details, it's expected that the Shelby Mustang will be very similar to the limited edition Ford Shelby GT-H, a 335-horsepower Mustang that's available only as a rental at select Hertz locations.

Pricing has not been released, but the new Shelby is expected to be affordable.

Mustang and Carroll Shelby fans have clamored on Web sites for Ford to begin selling the Shelby GT-H in dealerships.

"It would be very interesting," said Howard Pardee, of Waterford, Conn., national director of the Shelby American Automobile Club. "The GT-H already has a following. Shelby is the only icon remaining."

Ford also recently collaborated with the racing legend on the Shelby GT-500, an ultra high-performance Mustang that sells for about $40,000 and the Ford GT super car, which goes for about $140,000.

Shelby, 83, may be the racing world's greatest living legend.

He became only the second American to win at Le Mans when he co-drove an Aston Martin to victory in 1959.

Shelby went on to lead the Ford team that designed the GT40s and won a historic 1-2-3 victory at LeMans in 1966.

He then made his mark as a vehicle tuning whiz, developing his own sports car.

Shelby GT? 320 HP? I'm sure they can get another 30 HP out of the engine.

Perfect opportunity for a new GT350. Shelby owns the name, he should make use of it.

That's what I was thinking! After this Shelby GT comes out and they build the Boss, that will mean there are 5 performance level options on a Mustang - V6, GT, Shelby GT, Boss, & GT500. This means my GT will be the next to lowest performance level......WAHHHHHHH!!!!! I've got some creative financial planning to start on now.

It will be offered in colors other than black/gold. The car in Vegas was white/blue and had a hood scoop. Expect pricing to start $3000-$5000 over the GT.

Great move by Ford and a move that may help bring down prices on GT500's.

Hmmmm, I wonder if they'll make a vert version? A GT-H with a stick, vert top and roll bar/ light bar would be awesome!

This is good news.

however ... we dont have all the details. I welcome a Shelby GT ( GT 350? ) ... 325 HP??? well hopefully at production time it can be a 350 HP machine ... no super charging.

but lets hope we get a six speed and a 3.55 gear option

The GT-H program was a nice "proof of concept" for expanding to something like this. A Shelby-modified Ford Mustang like the old days will most likely command a premium, even if it is priced affordably. On the other hand, maybe it will bring the demand and supply more in line, having a calming effect on mark-ups.

Just when I am about to get my '07 I hear this - d'oh!

Remember guys, they only said it would be similar to the GT-H. I'm sure they'll give it more horsepower, otherwise the price would not be justified over the already powerfull GT. I'd bet we are going to see at least 350, if nothing more than to call the car the GT 350. The GT 500 having 500 horses was kind of a fluke but my bet is they'll keep it up. They'll still surely use the 4.6 though. Wonder what they are going to do to it for the extra ponies?
