Agreed!!! I'm all about pointing fingers at Ford and SAI, because both just seem to be money hungry, but yes they are hurting Shelby's name.

Shelby is riding the Mustang coat tails and the dealers have his stamp of approval, otherwise he would be a page in history. All he has is the 60's and the latest Ford gifts thanks to SVT and Ford Racing.

If his legacy is suffering he can thank himself and his croanies for it.

Mr Shelby did have an impact on the current S197 design. Where do you think the inspiration for the S197 rear quater windows came from? 1966 GT 350.

He's an icon.....OF THE 60's
He also was involved in the initial work on the Viper

I said 1966 not 1965. Not sure why you felt it necessary to respond to me the way you did. I was simply trying to point out that C.S. did have a modest impact on the current design.

And let's not forget the tire size for the rear wheels of the '07 GT500!

I know all about Carroll. He's an icon.....OF THE 60's. It's 2007 now. SAI bolts on FRPP parts and collects money for Shelby badging licensing. WTF has Shelby done for the Mustang the last FORTY YEARS? Wow, how conveniant.... they come along when FORD makes a retro body style to milk baby boomers! Deal with it. Keep telling yourself the 07'
GT500 is a "Shelby", lol

It's true Carroll Shelby was involved with the definitive sports car of the 60's, the Ford Cobra. But you have to be aware he was also involved with what is likely the definitive American sports car of the 90's the Dodge Viper. In the 50's he was a World class race car driver and left an impact on Ausin Healy (land speed record at Bonneville), Maserati, and Aston Martin. The Shelby automotive group was key in creating the GT40 and helped them dominate tracks in the mid-60's. Since you chose to belittle those accomplishments, perhaps you can outline your accomplishments in the automotive industry?

I'm not belittling anything he did FORTY YEARS AGO. My point is, his involvement in CURRENT Mustangs = ZERO. SAI of today != SAI of yesterday.

You are entitled to your opinion. SAI and Ford both claim that Carroll Shelby has made contributions to the SE Mustangs. Yet, you claim he has zero input.

Yes, I readily concede you have every right to be skeptical as to the extent of his involvement, if you'll concede I might be skeptical of your equation above.

PS in case you missed it, Carroll Shelby was involved with the Dodge Viper project. (JMO it's a beast!) Referencing my desktop calendar, that doesn't look to be FORTY YEARS AGO. His name, right or wrong (everyone is entitled to an opinion) is on a current Mustang SE.

Regardless of Carroll Shelby's involvment, or lack thereof, it is hard to ignore the point that his name has a value (peformance or marketing) today. If it didn't, Ford wouldn't use it.

Personally, I wouldn't pay the extra $$ to have his name on my car. But, that's just me. I don't begrudge those who do--either with the intent to collect, or just as an afficionado.

The sad part is Ford see's ZERO extra money from the Shelby marketing. They invoice GT500's for what, $37k or so to the dealer?

Ford sold 13,000 Cobra's in 2003. Shelby's name isn't needed to move high performance Mustangs.

Excellent point. But then, that sort of thinking could put some Marketing Guru out of a job.

ford did not sell all the 2003 cobras in 2003. The local dealer near me had 10+ that they had to put rebates on to move.

weather or not they would have sold with shelbys name on it i don't know.

oh and one more thing...if you think shelbys name was just for gt500 sales then you are wrong. its to bring people into the showrrom and sell them on a base gt or fusion or any other ford.

Look eci isn't trying to belittle Carroll Shelby, the man, but he and I came to the agreement last night, if you read through this thread, that yes had made great accomplishments and yes his name carries weight in the Ford community and the automotive industry, but SAI and dealerships are ruining his name.

On a different note how ridiculous do you guys think prices would have been for a Ford GT had it been a Shelby GT, not the Mustang the supercar? Or if Ford decides to go through with any of the other cars that Shelby has been 'involved' with how do you think the prices are going to be on those. Ford currently has the rights to the Shelby GR-1 and a Shelby Cobra roadster, I believe. These are both concepts but have made appearances at a few car shows. Just how insane or markups going to be on a supercar that carries his name.
