5.0L V8 = more power, more mileage?

Because they aren't "ready for prime-time" yet.

Keep in mind that sequential gearboxes such as the BMW M3's SMG or DCT are actually manuals, thee are no tq. converters. What would be nice if Ford doesn't want to give us DCT or SMG style trannies is to give us at least a 6spd.l auto with manual capabilities like the 2010 Fusion now has.

I think they want to give us DCT, since they're already putting one out for small cars. But the carpocalypse has probably slowed development of their big car/RWD version.

Actually, I'm hoping just the opposite. Since the DSG or DCT style transmissions are more fuel efficient (albeit, only slightly), I'm hoping they have stepped up development for higher powered applications to gain every advantage possible as soon as possible. Sigh...... Oops, sorry... back to what will really happen and the profit today at the expense of tomorrow reality.

BTW, the majority of Japanese cars do in fact have the muffler(s) at the rear of the car.
I realize this guy has been banned but didn't at least the '67-'68 Mustangs have rear transverse mufflers (that you could see hanging down) with resonators in the middle?

A six-speed auto seems pretty much a given at this point (to me, anyway), but I'm more interested in who they are going to get it from.

The 5.8L was cancelled?!

When, and why?

When? A while ago. Approximately a year or so, but I don't remember off the top of my head.

Why? When gas was consistantly climbing, and truck sales were dropping, they scalled the Hurricane/Boss program back, and made the decision to go with only 1 motor, the 6.2L.

Don't understand why people want this motor in the car anyway? Its heavier than the 5.4 in the Shelby and thats a heavy block! The 5.0 V8 thats coming, aka Coyote, is gonna be a sweet motor! 400+ hp in a smaller application than the 6.2, which will have roughly 400 or so hp in its own right, but the torque is much more at lower RPMs for the 6.2 (a better feature for pulling trailers and other work applications truck do). Not using the 6.2 is better for the end result.

Been living under a rock?
this happened like... a LONG time ago.

The 5.8 was canned and the 6.2 was, then at the time, sent to the truck only pile (only to later go to the Super Duty and Raptor farm)

The BOSS motors were simply too big/heavy/thirsty for what they wanted to achieve in the mustang.
Thus the 5.0 was born and built with purpose.
And in the future when the death knell for the current gen mods hits,
kiss the old motors goodbye... but don't mourn them, oh no.....
There's MORE to look forward to

Is the 5.0 going to have direct injection at first, or do we have to wait for that too?

It won't have DI in 2011..it may be delayed until the new Stang is released in 2014 but could see duty in 2012/13. I think we will see the twin turbo Ecoboost 6 before we see the DI 5.0L.
This Ecoboost 6 in mild trim is 340hp with a ton of low end tq., think ala 335i which makes peak tq. just off idle at 1300rpm all the way to 6krpm.

Well DCT trannies are living behind 414hp M3's and SMG III in 500+hp M5/M6's. Also the PCars with their PDK, which is basically very similar to BMW's DCT.

Eco boost is not in the cards for the the Stang... They'll most likely stick to the plan of a basic v6 (3.5?), and a couple v8 options. Trust me on this one.

Evidently you haven't seen the Popular Mechanic's Video, with Paul Randle, Chief Engineer for the 2010 Mustang. Pay close attention to his reply when Ben Stewart asked specifically about the Eco-Boost, near the end of the video.

Trust Me On This. Ford will offer the Eco-Boost in the Mustang. They really don't have a choice. Gas is not going to stay at $1.50 long, and through Eco-Boost, as well as some other technology that is how they are going to get the Fuel Economy Numbers to keep the Mustang Alive.
