I don't think the plane can fly fast enough!
Well, it looks like it will be a non-issue because he'll probably be able to attend. But if for some reason he cannot attend, I highly doubt they would make an exception for him. Common sense should tell you that the rules are the rules and they must be followed. If they print the rules and don't abide by them, they do nothing but open themselves up to a big fat lawsuit. Like I said, it doesn't matter because it seems that he'll be in LA on time, I hope.
Imagine the bad press they'd get if they didn't follow their own rules and denied an alternate winner if the first winner couldn't make it to LA.

To not give him the car would violate the SCRA law.
If not specifically, certainly the spirit (no jury would allow the car to go to anyone else).
From the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act:
"(2) Stay of enforcement of other contracts
(A) In the case of any other obligation, liability, tax, or assessment, the court may grant a stay of
enforcement--
(i) during the servicemember's military service; and
(ii) from the date of termination of or release from military service, or from the date of application if made
after termination or release from military service.
(B) Any stay under this paragraph shall be--
(i) for a period of time equal to the period of the servicemember's military service or any part of such"

Interesting. Good find man. I had forgotten all about the SCRA. I've been talking to my legal department to help me along the way and getting things done right. It's a big plus being in the Army and having all these services available to you for free. I'm sure that had someone else in the civilian world won, they might not have taken the time or MONEY to go see an attorney or paralegal to get things squared away.
Dude congrats that is a majorly awesome deal, you deserve it for serving in the dust bowl, thank you.
I have a feeling that Ford would honor the gift if he could not make it.
If you think about it Ford knows that he is in the military and deployed.
They knew this and they picked him as the winner, if they had an issue with it they would not have picked him.
If he could not make the event it would still be a huge PR boost for Ford.
The event would go like this;
"We would like to congratulate Kory Chesher as the grand prize winner of the 2010 Ford Mustang Stories Contest. Unfortunately Kory could not make the event tonight because he is on duty in Iraq."
"The Mustang being an American icon; we can’t think of a person that deserves it more than an active duty military personnel; we would like to thank him for his service to the nation and congratulations Kory!!"
"The Ford mustang is as American as apple pie."
Ford just sold 25,000 more mustangs with that statement.
That is my take anyways.
Congrats again dude.

I like the way that sounds! I really appreciate all the warm thanks. It still really hasn't hit me yet as to what's really going on. I guess once I'm out of this "wonderful" country and home in America it will weigh heavier on me and I can finally realize the awesomeness that is winning!
Not to beat a dead horse here, but some of you guys seem to know very little about the law. I'm not a lawyer myself, but the SCRA would not apply to a contest with specific written rules. Furthermore, Ford didn't pick him as a winner. e-prize judges picked him as a finalist and the general public picked him by voting for his story.
It's important to read the fine print when you enter a contest, if for no other reason than to understand exactly what you're up against. True, it would be a publicity nightmare, but if e-prize didn't follow the same rules than they set for the contest, trust me when I say that they would open themselves up to a lawsuit.
I certainly hope he can get home in time for the LA Auto Show. If something happens and he cannot, we'll see what happens...

I agree with the other contestants, even if I took second place I would give the car to its rightful owner. Of course I would ask them to give me one too but you can't blame a guy for tryin. If Ford is really smart they would tie their marketing together and have Tobe Keith give you the keys and sing "American Soldier". Congrats man, u deserve it!
True, but you know how people are in this country... they'd sue in a heartbeat if they changed the rules after the contest was over. Hell, look at that lady who sued (and won millions) after she spilled her coffee on her lap. I guess it was too hot, so McD's had to pay up.
