wow...imagine if word got out that Ford didn't care if their engines wore out faster with lighter oil......not only would it make headlines...but then they would have to get bailouts .....and 20w 50 would by flying off the shelves.
So Ford gets more tax credits for using 5w20??
now my engine is going to wear out faster because the engineers at ford are willing to compromise their own design so that they can get tax credits.
My GVWR on my mustang is probably 10,000lbs....but to save gas.....I'll only haul my golf clubs rather than my boat.

Seems like no matter what forum your on, the subject of oil comes up eventually.
I would stick with what Ford recommends. The most important thing to prevent oil breakdown is to Change your oil.
The motorcraft 5w/20 is a syn. blend and I personally don't like blends because you don't know how much is synthetic and how much is dino oil. (and whats real funny is how they always say not to mix the two)
I will go on the factory oil and then change to a 5/20 full synthetic with a 5000 mile interval. For those of you that think that 5/20 is too light, there are several toyotas on the road today that run a 0/20 oil. I don't think toyota would run 0/20 if they thought their engines wouldn't last running it.
The technology is so much greater today then it was even 10 years ago when it comes to oil

by the way....has anyone been down a couple quarts ? I got about 7k miles and I added 2 quarts the other night and still don't see much oil on the dipstick.

Have you let anyone else do an oil change? There are numerous posts on the net about dealers putting in 2010 amounts of oil in 2011s.

If that was the original oil from the factory, I would go back to the dealer, you may have a problem. I just drove over 1400 miles round trip at 75 and got 26.4 miles to the gallon and used no oil. I did change the factory oil to Mobil 1 (5w-20) at 3000 miles and had the dealer do a 6 month service at 7000 miles and fill with full syn. They filled with the 8 quarts as required. I plan to take it in to he dealer at least once a year just to protect the warranty and my ESP extended warranty.

I think Ford recommends the 20W is because of CAFE standards as has been stated. In Australia, Ford goes to 30W in the same engines because they do not care about the CAFE issue. I think either one will do as well. A good 0-30W synthetic will do as well or better down low then the 5-20W and better at higher temps. Ford only cares if your engine lasts until its out of warranty so lasting 100,000 miles is not an issue for them. However, as long as you are not on a track, I don't think it matters. I think either would work as long as it is good oil and you change when needed. I also agree that oil threads are volatile and folks believe what they believe and seldom change their minds. I know that I should not respond to oil threads but sometime I can't help myself. For anyone who really cares, I would refer them to Bobistheoilguy for all you would ever want to know on oil and filters....

I run 5W-20 Pennzoil Platinum (or Pennzoil Ultimate if it's on sale), which I buy from Wal-Mart in the 5-qt containers (of course it takes two for a full oil change). I've never had any problems and I've not seen any excess consumption (see my thread about "hott dipstick" where many on TMS chided me for wanting to check my oil when at gas station). So you KNOW I keep tabs on it.

My wife's car (2006 Odyssey) also uses 5W-20 so I just keep plenty of Pennzoil Platinum on hand. I use the stock/OEM filters in each.

That said, I HAVE heard of a case of excess oil consumption in the 2011 5.0.
