Summer tires: Pilot Super Sports vs Hankook V12 Ventus
Summer tires: Pilot Super Sports vs Hankook V12 Ventus
I've got some Laguna Seca 19x9 wheels coming and am trying to decide what tires to get. The Hankook Ventus V12 in 275 40 19 is really compelling at $840 or so shipped with a $160 rebate. The reviews are all excellent for as cheap as they are. I could almost get two sets of these for one of the Super Sports.
On the other hand, the reviews of the Michelin Super Sports are just glowing saying how fantastic they grip and how good the tread wear is for a max performance summer tire. The best price I can find on these is about $1300 shipped with no rebates.
These are the two I've narrowed it down to. Anybody got advice to push me one way or the other? I've been leaning toward saving the money and going with the Hankooks, but I don't want to regret my decision seeing as I already dropped a bunch of cash on wheels. I mainly want more grip off the line. I have the sucky all season P zero neros now. Are the Super Sports really that good?

Pilot sports are amazing in the rain. Dry performance will probably be similar. Have you looked at nitto tires? If you want something really grippy they have a couple that are reasonable price wise and super sticky
I'm running the Nitto 555 on my car and its an okay tire, I'd rate it somewhere between the OE Goodyear F1 tires and the BF Goodrich KDWs. If I were to go with Nitto's again, I'd look at the Invo.
Dry performance is what I'm mainly worried about. The only time the Mustang sees rain is if it creeps up on us while we're already out. It's strictly a weekend car. We've got a Focus and a Super Duty for the daily slog.
Those Super Sports look awesome but man they're proud of them. With the discount tire $160 rebate on the Hankooks plus double ebay bucks I'm about to pull the trigger on them I believe. It makes the effective price around $650 for 4 once all the rebates come in. I won't feel as bad about the occasional quick burnout either. LOL
I've heard the Nittos hook up great, but the wife's cousin has 555s on his Fox body and man they're loud. A lot of that could be the car and the lack of insulation, though.

I have the ventus v 12's and love them. I drive in a style that would best be described as quite freakin' SPIRITED, but I don't track. They are more than sufficient for what I put them through. I guess it comes down to what demands you're going to put on it? Good luck making the right choice.
Too late to change the order? If not get BFG Comp 2's.

They are just a little more money and I'd bet good money they out perform the EVO 12 in all areas. The EVO 12 is considered a budget tire not worth going against other extreme performance tires. Check out the tire rack test results videos. Plus BFG also has a special running on them similar to Hankook.

If its just street driven I have never seen the need for high end tires. For drag strip, auto-x or tracking then I get it as you want to extract every last bit of grip. I am all about budget tires for the street tho. When I need new ones I probably will pick up the highest tread wear tires I can find. They survive more burn outs
I'm curious too. Any feedback on Mickey Thompson new tire? http://www.americanmuscle.com/mickey...255-45-18.html
I put 46K on the stock set of pirelli tires, and still could have pushed them another 1500 miles. I bought a set of Michelin Super Sports, and am very happy with them. Much less road noise, and the tracking is excellent. I have about 1500 miles on them so far, so I can't vouch yet for the long term mileage.
