Sedan and Wagon Mustangs? WTF?

Well, I'll defiinitely agree that the new Mustang is a "halo car" of sorts for Ford...or at least it was in its first model year. Interest seems to be waning a bit now. But the numbers don't bear out it saving Ford from extinction.
In fact, nothing seems to be currently reversing that course. As I mentioned in another thread, when you mortgage your home so you can pay for daily living expenses, you're in very big trouble. I don't think Ford has ever been as close to extinction as it is now. And even if it does improve its products across the line, I'm inclined now to think it won't make a difference if it doesn't MASSIVELY improve the customer service experience across its dealership network, judging from many of the comments I read on this board. Some of the stories I read around here honestly make me rethink whether or not I should even consider buying a new Stang.

Our FoA source advises Lincoln and Mustang Projects are not linked to Aussie orion
Would concur with my speculation.

Hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question V-10 but what exactly is BON ?? I have no idea what that is nor have I ever heard of it before ? and is it also safe to assume that Ford will not be killing off D2C in favor of the new Aussie Orion platform when the 2010 Stang goes into production

At this point nothing is safe to assume. We're all just sitting here trading rumors and speculation attempting to play detective separating any small bits of factual info. from all the BS. Ford has said almost nothing official on any of these future vehicles, show car concepts or real production models.

The Fusion is on a much smaller platform and is also FWD..The 427 was originally going to be based off of DEW/98 as a RWD

And KC, please stop that, it makes me ill to think of how close that sort of thinking is in the glass house...I don't trust them any further than the second loan payment.

Although the Fusion "borrowed" some styling cues from the 427, it has nothing else in common with the 427.
The 427 was a long wheelbase, RWD vehicle with a short front overhang.
The Fusion is a short wheelbase, FWD vehicle with a big front overhang.
If you think the Fusion looks anything like the 427, RUN, do not walk, to your nearest optomitrist!

Now you know why so many of us are concerned about things. That was just one of MANY short sighted and near catastrophic choices made in Dearborn over the last few years...the results of which will be with Ford for at least another half dozen years or so.

Yup. New Malibu notwithstanding. And a new Camry on the way.
Now, of course, Ford is still years away from the RWD sedan they don't have, as evidenced by the two new concepts to be shown next week...(Panthers don't count for much in this, Lincoln is a grey ghost and fleet sales are keeping STAP open, nothing else.)
So, we are left with a traditional Ford problem. Stumble and recover, years late, at the expense of keeping a decent product current.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
Until there is no hair left I guess....

You are correct, it is the Corolla that is being delayed a year to deal with quality concerns. Either way, the Fusion is the best Ford intro since the then new Focus. They have to do a lot more, a lot better to get the lien off the builiding.

I wouldn't exactly say Fusion sales are setting the world on fire.
Ford will sell about 140,000 Fusions in calender year 2006.
By Comparison, Toyota will sell ~500,000 Camrys.
And Ford will sell 165,000 Mustangs, 175,000 Focus & 185,000 Tarurus.

You're forgetting variants of the model. i.e. - Milan and zephyr (MKZ). Which total up to about 20,000 sales per month in North America. The Camry is Toyota's bread and butter, I would hope they are selling that many of them. Fusion and variants are not Ford's flagship sedans.

Total sales:
Fusion - Milan - MKZ = 211,000 / year
Carmry - ES-350 = 550,000 / year
