Leather Recaro seat bottom outside bolster pain....FIXED!
Leather Recaro seat bottom outside bolster pain....FIXED!
I'm a fairly hefty guy and after 30k miles, the metal in my Recaro seat bottom was really starting to dig in to my left thigh. I couldn't drive more than 5 minutes without constantly fidgeting I pulled the seat out and removed the leather around that seat bottom bolster. What I discovered was that the foam has worn completely through at the top of the bolster "blade", so I was just getting leather covered metal into my leg.
The seat bottom foam slips over the bolster blade like a knife in a sheath, which seemed like a waste, seeing as you don't sit on the outside of the bolster at all. I pulled the foam off of the blade, stuffed it into the bolster pocket in the seat skin, and then pulled all of that over the blade, which doubled the bolster padding on the inside and leaving just the metal under the leather skin on the outside. The top of the bolster blade is 5mm thick and rounded, so I'm not worried about it wearing through in any way. Externally, it looks exactly the same.
WHY DIDN'T I DO THIS ON DAY ONE?!?
The car is so much better to drive. I can actually use the dead pedal now. I went for a drive and it felt like I was in a completely different seat. I am finally comfortable driving the car.
Notes:
The skin was held on by little flat plastic hooks. It was a breeze to remove and I could have pulled it off without removing the seat. You unclip the leather skin from the front of the seat and 2 plastic hooks on the side. Then you just pull the leather out from under the plastic cover where the seat adjustments are.
I first tried bending the bolster blade. The blade is framed by a thick steel wire formed into the bolster shape with a thin piece of sheetmetal closing it. I could have bent it, but I needed a hand, which I didn't have. I'm happy with the solution I came up with.
