I would never pour warm water on a frozen window.

Unless Canadian winters do differ from Swiss ones, the cover won't stick to the windows. We have minus 15 to 20 Celsius right now and ist takes me barely a minute to unwrap the car in the morning. No ice on the windows. The hot water trick however seems very risky...

And right you are! If the temperature is to high, they will crack. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. I really wonder why so many people recommend that...

Cool water will melt the ice as well, and won't change the temperature drastically enough to crack it.

Of course, you could always look for a job transfer to the south, or try to find a place to live with a garage...
