I just purchased a 2012 V6 Lava Red Mustang.

I’ve been wanting a mustang for years but circumstances kept me from getting one. I found this used on at a local dealership and they listed it as black but once I saw it I knew this was not black. Lava Red is it a discontinued color? Special for the year? Did I find a gem? (I think I did either way)

Yep, Lava Red is a rare color . . . pretty sure it was available in the 2012 model year only, and not very many produced.

Gratz, it is a nice color. Most dealerships and sales people know nothing about the cars they sell anyway.

I looked at a Lava Red GT in 2011 before I bought my Red Candy. I liked the color, but couldn't find one with the options that I wanted. I can't remember ever seeing one on the street. Enjoy your new ride.

Yep, very rare 2012 only like it's been mentioned. It's rare because the factory that produced the pigment was severely damaged in the tsunami that hit Japan that year. Other colors like Kona Blue were also affected. Ford did have enough KB for more Mustangs that year, but discontinued KB for other cars and brought back Sonic Blue as a replacement on the Focus. They didn't have any backup for LR so even body shops could not get it to repair LR cars. They had to mix up their own blend to match. I'm not sure if the factory ever came back online, but Ford does offer a very similar color on the current 2018+ F-150s called Magma Red but even then it has much more color than LR and isn't as dark. Royal Crimson on the 2018+ Mustang is similar too.
