ya know I have to say I don't really care anymore either. I keep that gauge off. Don't care about the miles or the mpg's Just drive and have fun doing it.

If you have a long commute and/or drive in heavy traffic and still buy a SPORT CAR with a V8 engine and then complain about bad MPG, then you deserve a and the 10MPG you are getting

Using decel fuel cut to your advantage can make a huge difference. I drive much more aggressively than my wife but she see's a red light ahead and doesn't brake until the rest of the traffic does. I on the other hand get off the throttle and leave it in gear and coast (and downshift when the rpm gets below 1500 or so) and either downshift all the way to a stop, or often times I don't even have to stop because the light will turn before I get below 20mph. I do the same when going down a hill that would require a little brake to maintain speed...I just coast or downshift and coast to maintain speed instead of riding the brake...same when coming up on slower traffic, decel in gear rather than brakes whenever possible. The ecu shuts off all fuel flow when coasting to a stop in gear so this makes a significant difference over time. My wife, driving like a typical mid 20's responsible woman gets 19-21mpg. Me driving like a typical somewhat responsible late 20's man (spirited driving at times, other times responsible, always decel in gear rather than using brakes) and I get 22-24mpg, both with a 50/50 city/highway mix.

Maybe there should be separate "Type A" and "Type B" personality EPA mpg ratings, or maybe a North/South differential. Most of the management where I work are impatient, bumper-hawking tailgaters. My next-door-neighbor (who also works where I do, and is originally from New England) will actually PASS PEOPLE on the way TO work, on unmarked two-lane (barely) rural roads!! In a 4-cylinder 1997 Toyota pickup! Sorry, but I am NEVER in that much hurry to get to work! Coming home is sometimes a different story - that's when I cannot tolerate the idiot in the minivan going 48 in a 55. I've driven in Manhattan and fully understand the kill-or-be-killed driving environment up there...

My point is that some people are simply overly aggressive drivers and don't even realize it b/c they are wired that way, and I think that could have a lot to do with decreased MPG. Not saying it's the O.P. or anyone here, just posting a hypothesis that it might be a significant factor.

My stock GT got 26 on the highway and it would have been better except for some nearby small mountains, that takes away mileage for sure. Now I have higher gears and a supercharger. I can only get 24 highway but pretty consistant 19-20 all around driving.

With the 3.31 rear gear and being blown I could get 28+ om the interstate cruising at 75 ..

Driving 65miles round trip to work I got 22,

Then I had 4.10's installed. Now I get 22 on the highway at 65,, 18 to work and I burned over a quarter tank Saturday making 8 passes at 120mph ...

I'm hitting between 17-18 in city driving. Highway I've seen close to 25. That was cruising at 70 with the cruise control on.

Being blown while on the interstate cruising at 75 is nice.

Quote of the day!

I think we all know that the Mustang 5.0 is very capable of 10mpg or less when driven hard, or driven for a long periods in stop and go traffic. On the other hand, if you can get the Mustang 5.0 out on a nice uninterrupted cruise at a constant reasonable speed in the 60-70mph range, you can get great mileage. Somewhere between 25-28 mpg is not unheard of during cruises, but it requires a huge amount of restraint.

And also dangerous. Plus it requires a willing passenger.
(HAHA! Nice catch)

You just need to use two automated systems provided by ford to obtain great milage. The rev limiter will let you know the optimum time to shift and the yellow gas light tells you when it's the best time to fill up.
Too easy.
My kind of driver!

Personally, cruising the interstate is relaxing for me, so I like to set the Cruise and see what kind of mileage it gets.

Just for the record, I Reset the MPG meter when I got to the drag strip. After 2 passes it read:

3 mpg!!

I can get anywhere from 10 to 26 depending on conditions. I can get to work and back and avg 22 but that is 30 miles each way and 99% highway and not exceeding 75. I can also get 16 over that same route. Best I've seen sustained is 26 at 65mph with cruise on. I like being a couple gears lower though!

What is everyone's single best tank? How many miles? I've gone about 250 miles between fill ups.

I drive 12 miles to work each day on a 2 lane country highway. Best mileage ever observed on my Bullitt has been 28.5. Routinely I get 21-23 mpg. Tooling around town, I shift before 2000 RPM and go to 5th at 40. I have 3.73 gears, and I think this helps me out because I can up shift sooner. I use my cruise control as much as possible - usually set at 65 (on country roads) and 73 on the interstate. If you have climate control, it will drag your mileage down. You have to maually set the AC to recirc (worth 2 mpg on my SHO). Synthetic oil (Mobil 1) is also worth 1-2 mpg. Gas choice matters - premium gas will get better mileage than regular. Ethanol free gas is worth a 20 percent increase as well. Of course you have to have everything line up to maximize this, but these are all little things that add up. If you live in a big city with a lot of lights and congestion, you're mileage will be worse as well.
