If the engine can't live up to being BOSS, maybe Ford was right to drop the name. But then again, Ford would be wrong to release a new engine that can't compete with the LS family and neo-"HEMI"s after having it in development for so long.
Now it seems the marketing wizards are fXXXXXg things up again - instead of "BOSS", buyers will probably get something called "Middle Management (V8)"... sigh, might as well. At least it'll sound more imposing than "Entry Level (V8)".

From a marketing standpoint, I can understand why they would change it.
Why confuse people with a BOSS engine name, and a BOSS car without a BOSS.

You have a 2009/2010 BOSS mustang with a 5.4 4v that's NOT a boss engine, but a boss car. And then you put out a BOSS engine that will not be in a BOSS car. Makes for some confusion among the general public.

Should they name the engine? Is it really worth the cost/money?
The Mod motor doesn't have any name nor does the LSx line,
it doesn't make them any more intense.

I could care less if the 3.5TT is called the TwinForce or called 'a 3.5L TT engine'
If anything, the BOSS engines should be called CobraJet

ford has some legal issues with the name BOSS. just like the gt 40 and even the mustang name. it seems some idiots think they can come along and steal it. believe me ford didn't want to go after companys using mustang in their name. they were forced to or risk losing it. i thought the BOSS thing was all clreared up but maybe it's not.personally i like interceptor for a name. it dates back farther.

if there is going to be a Boss Mustang...there isn't any legal problems...

I found this....an agreement with Shinoda and Ford over the Boss name, it looks like Ford has the trademark for the Boss name and is licensing it to for use with Shinoda, under "Shinoda Boss"

the big problem is they have to pay a fee per car or engine which ever it be, it will only drive prices up and this forces them to reconsider using it.

As far as engines go, Ford has been using the name "BOSS" for years in Australia. http://www.musclemustangfastfords.co...gtp/index.html

Go do a search on the USPTO website. Ford owns every variation of the Boss name except "Shinoda Boss". They don't have to pay squat to anyone to use the name.

How about this: Ford is going to call the basic engines "Premium" and reserve the Boss moniker for the Hi-Po versions.

The Boss Name would Likely Require Royalty Payments to Shinoda Which I believe Has Some Controlling Interest in the BOSS Trademark.

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! Why does this misconception still exist? Here's a cut-and-paste from the US Patent & Trademark Office web site:

Word Mark BOSS
Goods and Services IC 012. US 019 021 023 031 035 044. G & S: automobiles, trucks, vans, sport-utility vehicles, structural parts for land vehicles and engines for land vehicles
Standard Characters Claimed
Mark Drawing Code (4) STANDARD CHARACTER MARK
Design Search Code
Serial Number 78383415
Filing Date March 12, 2004
Current Filing Basis 1B
Original Filing Basis 1B
Owner (APPLICANT) FORD MOTOR COMPANY CORPORATION DELAWARE THE AMERICAN ROAD DEARBORN MICHIGAN 48121
Attorney of Record ELIZABETH JANDA
Prior Registrations 2033246;2249931;AND OTHERS
Type of Mark TRADEMARK
Register PRINCIPAL
Live/Dead Indicator LIVE
Ford also has similar entries for "Boss 302", "Boss 351", "Boss 429", and "Ford Boss". The only trademark owned by Shinoda is "Shinoda Boss" and they have that per an agreement with Ford.

Yeah, I'm surprised that everytime the boss name comes up.... everyone states the Shinoda Boss thing.

Seriously though, about naming the engines... Boss is good and all...but I like CobraJet better....

I'd love this naming structure.

CobraJet (N/A engine)
Super CobraJet (Super Charged Engine)
TurboJet (TurboCharged Engine)
TwinFang (Twin TurboCharged Engine)

I don't care what it's called as long as a version of it makes it into a mainstream Mustang such as a GT that the working man like myself can afford.

Perhaps, if that recent Ford poll cirulated around recently is any indication, there might well be a Jag-sourced 5.0 of around 375hp. To call this motor a "Boss" motor might make good sense given it's similar 5.0 displacement and hi-power out of modest displacement character of the original Boss 302. Coupled with the also mentioned IRS and six-speed, you have just the makings of a latter day Boss 302 with its well-balanced, road and track-racer spirit.

Then what about that Hurricane/Boss/Whatever new engine that Ford's been glacially slow to develop? Given that it seems to be a big engine, the Cobra Jet name might be an apt appellation like the old Cobra Jet 427s, 428s, 429s and even 351s if I recall (am I forgetting a few?). Would be interesting for the Stang to end up with essentially 3 different V8s: Mod motor 4.6 GT, Jag motor 5.0 "Boss," and a big-block (5.7?) Cobra Jet (for a Mach I model?). That would be just like the good ol' days when Ford offered a whole suite of motors to satisfy every taste.

Maybe that could be their competitive advantage over the Camaro and Challenger, a much richer suite of options and varients to tailor the Stang to one's liking.

Jag sourced V8 Not thrilled about that, no matter how outstanding the motor might be. I'd rather they made an all aluminum 3v 5.4.

Rhumb, just curious where you heard the rumor of a 5.0L Jag sourced V8. More details, please.

As Boomer proposed, "CobraJet" is the perfect moniker for the new Hurricane engine series, it reflects Ford's history more distinctly than calling it the "Boss" engine series IMHO

"I'll answer that for Rhumb..."

Ford sent out an e-mail to many existing Mustang owners with a survey asking for opinions on future Mustang options. One of the questions involved a jag-sourced v-8 as well as a tt v6.
