My 13 5.0 MT82 had the smell just when I reached like 5000rpms or more.. It had 1800miles.. I start to rev it to 5000rpm at 1300miles.. until now never reached more than 6000rpms

I have 23k miles on my car. Since I bought it, with 900 miles, I have noticed a weird, slight burning smell after elevating the RPM's past 6k. It comes thru the vents a few seconds after I redline it.

It doesn't matter if the car is even driving. I tried revving it up while in neutral in the driveway to see if it produced the smell. Sure enough

Nope, this smell even comes up if you simply rev it up while parked & in neutral.

Picked mine up a week ago, and yep upon hard acceleration it does that smell too. I do hope it goes away! I'd rather use my nose to alert me to when there really is a new problem, not just thinking "it always does that". It will become a Chicken Little smell.

So does the smell still happen if the air is not in re-circ mode?

Illegal. Not just a state law, but federal. Huge fine if you're caught. It's also illegal for you to sell a vehicle in a private sale or trade in to a dealer. If a dealer attempts to sell a trade-in without it's cats, they will be handed down a huge fine, and have to take the vehicle back. My son bought a used Subaru WRX from a dealer; it's cats were removed. A month or so later, it was in for a bad CV/axle. The repair tech pointed out that the cats were removed. We contacted the dealer. We were promptly given the choice to have them install cats for free (all at their expense), or a full refund of the vehicles purchase price. They apparently knew that they sold the vehicle illegally without it's required emissions equipment.

At the very least, keep the cats if you remove them. You'll want to re-install when you sell or trade in.

This TSB is for some 2012-2013 Explorer vehicles equipped with a 3.5L TI-VCT engine, safety.

I recommend both of you make appointments with your dealers for diagnosis. Then, PM me with your VIN, dealer, mileage, full name, and best daytime number so I can get this escalated for you.
