Newbie here, well at least to this generations Mustangs. My very first car was a 73 Mach 1, but I digress.... Purchased a slightly used 2013 V6 Convertible on Friday and tried the SelectShift today for the first time. Seems as if it still shifts through the first three gears itself. Is that normal?
Thanks!

You've gotta initiate the select shift by hitting the buttons once its in sport shift. Other wise sport shift is just another gear that will do it all by itself, still.

It's likely just operator error, sorry. If you shift into 'S' (Sport mode), it will shift automatically for you 1st thru 5th. However, once you shift up or down a gear gear using the up/down button while in Sport mode, then it becomes Sport-Manual mode, giving you full control of all gear selection using the up/down button.

No. After you pull it back, it will display an 'S' on the screen, which is "Sport Shift" mode and won't shift to 6th. To manually after the screen shows the 'S' you need to move the press the rocker switch, and at that point you will be able to manually select a gear.

When in "Select Shift" mode, the transmission will hold the gear you've selected, except when you slow down when it will drop down automatically to the highest (numerically) acceptable gear for the vehicle speed if you didn't perform the shifts yourself first.

Hi stevew2023,

Here you can find helpful videos about your vehicle, including your 6-speed SelectShift Automatic Transmission.

Did they do something to the trans in 2014? My car shifts like buttah. I nudge it into a gate and it will literally pull the stick the rest of the way.

I've found that once I initiate SelectShift, It will never shift up automatically and if I am cruising along in third or second, it will not downshift automatically. If I have been cruising along in fourth or fifth and slow down or stop, it does downshift automatically.

Hahahaha. This is funny. You will NEVER crush the manual counter to your auto. That tranny is slow and boring. I drove one and almost fell asleep.

From there, sure I've read the "issues" people have had with the mt82. But there are also a lot of inaccuracies spread about it. First off it is NOT Chinese. Getrag is German and they make trans for idk, Audi, BMW M series, etc. Second is that the trans is actually quite strong. Unless you have taken it apart and seen its innards first hand you can't really speak to this. The shifter could be better, but the tranny is great! Most issues I attribute to user error or paranoid drivers that "think" there is a problem (the dealer is obviously going to pull it and replace stuff, but this isn't proof that there was a problem. They make their money from fixing under warranty).

Since you said "select shift" and cruising in second or third, then you are using the +/- button to shift for yourself. Once you use that button you are out of "automatic sport mode" and into "manual sport mode". So it won't shift up until you tell it to by hitting the "+" button.

If you simply pull the shifter into S it will run like an automatic, it just has a more aggressive transmission tune and 6th gear is locked out (you can get to 6th by hitting the + button but then you have moved out of automatic sport mode).

Just because you hear stories on "all" forums doesn't mean much. Most people that have issues post it on multiple places. The amount of issues (a lot being duplicates) you see online does not represent what exist in the real world. Of those issues, some might be real. But most are user error. A lot of people claim/think they are proficient at driving MT but really are not.

The clutch issues you are referring to have no negative affect on driving or parts and also have nothing to do with the tranny itself.

Time to go work on the Mustang…the winged kind.

Having claimed to have driven exotics and whatnot I'm not sure how you can still call the auto "lightning" fast.

Also (as if it needed proving), there is a lot of proof that a large amount of power is lost on the auto compared to the manual.

Select shift

I wish Ford would have made it so that when you initially move it to "S", it shows you the gear the car is in currently and then what gear it is in as it changes while still in automatic mode. The display does not show the gear until you start manually shifting it with the button. Showing the gear and gear changes would be more useful than just seeing "sport mode" on the dash. It could flash to sport mode for a few seconds then tell me what gear it is in

There have been a few occasions where I downshifted to 1st accidentally when slowing down for a turn because the transmission had just switched to 2nd right before I manually tried to downshift to second myself... Anyone else ever have that issue, has happened to me 2-3 times now.

I must say though the feeling of having the car at 5000 RPMS in 3rd then holding it there while stomping it to the floor and having it push you back in the seat all the way to the redline makes me smile and laugh, especially the other day when an old timer in an new R/T challenger was left in the dust on my way to the store
