When mine went bad, or so I thought, I was in the same position. I didn't want it to lock up and end up in a wall. You can find replacements out there for right around 300, you just need to be patient. Mine was down for a couple months before I found anything. Hopefully you get yours done quicker then I did though.

Hopefully. I am kind of weary to buy a used axle, it could have the same problem.. haha you never know.

Its always possible. But then again, so could a new one. The 2 I've bought, the replacement 7.5 and the 8.8 in the car now, were both used.

It wouldn't be to much trouble to open it up and check the bearings and backlash.. But heres my question, if you have the replacement axle, is it just a drop in affair?

Yep. Drop one out, put the other right back in. Should only take a couple hours to do.

Alright, it shouldn't be too bad, I just had the axle off, aside for uca and driveshaft to install the lcas

Yea its a little shorter, I think 3in. You can use it, but the tires will be tucked a little more.

Good to hear it. Really rough having your car down, but if I were you I would look into an IRS while you have it out anyway. Most Cobras have a lot less miles than GT's. Mine only had 10k miles on it.

I would love that, but probably wouldn't be able to do it cheaply.. keep on mind, I'm working on a high school budget.

I just figure if you're looking at 800 bucks to fix your diff, that's about what an IRS costs, and if you are comfortable pulling out a straight axle installing an IRS is a synch.

This would seriously be an awesome upgrade, but they don't cone up for sale often. And I read somewhere you would need a new driveshaft?

If you get a 99 or 01 it has the same flange and bolts up. If you get an 03/04 it has a different flange and can be replaced for 30 bucks. I'm done tempting you though.

Hahaha, I'm keeping my eyes out for either a live axle or IRS.. there's alot of 98 model years axles for sale, with 373 gears already..

I did a bit of research, although a cobra irs swap would be ideal, i already have alot invested in the sra (catback, lcas, shocks and springs) and with new gears and fresh bearings it would pretty much finish up the rear end.
