Can I put a hitch on my Stang?

I hate to do it, but I'm thinking it is the lesser of two evils. I need a way to transport my mountain bike and my girlfriends and do not want to put a rack on that will scratch up my paint. So, I'm looking into getting a hitch put on, but my local Ford dealer doesn't do them, so I thought I'd see if anyone had any insights or experience with this. Help/Thoughts?

yes you can, from what I can remember you can tow 1,000 lbs. Since you will only have a bike rack just have it tucked under somewhat to hide it and get an extension for your rack (since it will be pretty light). I'm an avid mountain biker so I feel your pain.

I had one on my '05, I think Hidden Hitch was actually the brand. UHaul should have something also. They're out there.

I had one but was a big hasstle for them to stick it on a hoist ( Ford Dealer ship) to see if it would fit on a GT/CS so I returned it and apparently u-haul sell and install only if you buy from them. So my though was only for a couple jet skies and or bike rack.

hidden hitches arent usually that bad. they're class 1 setup uses a flat bar type reciever that is hardly noticeable.

there will be one on mine eventually. tire/motorcycle trailer for vacations and track days.

It's done

Thanks all for the input. Hidden Hitch it is. Thankfully, it does hide well, especially on my black stang. I then picked up a Thule Rack and I have to say it works great. It just felt odd putting a hitch on instead of a new performance mod, but at least my paint job will stay nice this way, as I wouldn't dare go near the trunk or roof racks.

Hey there UMich... I'm actually in a very similar boat, I was recommended a Saris trunk mount rack from a friend, so I got it and was trying it out. It seemed alright, but as soon as you put some weight on it, it just dug right into my bumper

So I'm actually contemplating a hitch now as well! Which did you end up getting from Hidden Hitch? I see a couple, one has a flat receiver, one is 1 1/4 inch... I'm not sure how the flat receiver would work with a rack since most racks use a square style.

Just curious what you ended up doing!

Terigox. I went with Hidden Hitch, and it is a class I hitch, with a 1.25" receiver. The Part Number is 60990 I believe. If you go to www.hiddenhitch.com there is a link at the top of the page called "Fit Guide". From there, you can select your vehicle and it will let you know which hitch fits your Stang. For my '99 there was only one option.

I have to say, so far so good. No worries about scratched paint from a trunk or roof rack and you honestly can barely see the hitch, especially since my Stang is black. I bought a Thule Bike Rack from REI to go with it to carry my bikes and that works well too. The rack actually can fit either a 2" or 1.25" receiver, so I can use it on other vehicles as well. I'll try to get some pix this weekend and post them if you'd like. The only downfall I can think of is there may not be a bike rack that carries more than two bikes and works with a class I hitch. That doesn't matter for me, because I only have two bikes to worry about, but if you need to carry more than two bikes, I'd do some searching on Yakima or Thule to see if they have a rack that works for a class I hitch and 4 bikes.

Some Pix of the hitch

OK, I finally got outside with the camera phone to take a couple pix. Here are two. The Hidden Hitch seems true to it's name and hides well.

The Thule Rack just slides into the opening and bolts on. It works like a charm.

I went to pre-ride a mountainbike race last weekend and come accross this in the parking lot..

A GT500 with a bike rack - some of you ma think this is excessive but I would do it.

That's great Laser! Thanks for the pix. Nice to see evidence that I'm not the only Mustang on the road with the hitch. ...now, I'm off to hit the trails again.
