I recently had tint installed. I specifically asked the installer if he had or would install felt. He said he has done a few new mustangs and hasn't had a problem. His opinion was that as long as the car/windows are kept clean they will not scratch. Most of the dealers around here use him on a regular basis. I will play by his rules, but if it scratches I'm going back for that lifetime warranty and some felt.

I am thinking no felt. I will have the tint stop on the windows before it would make contact with the rubber seal.

I felted before I gave them a chance to scratch. Better safe than sorry.

The 1st thing my tint guy looked at was the inside channel and said if I didn't add felt it would most likely scratch. The felt was only an additional $15.00 per side so it was really a no brainer. That was in March and I have yet to get my first scratch!

I talked to my tint guy about the scratching problem before it was tinted. They did a pretty good job, but he decided that I didn't need the felt after looking at the inner window guild. It sure felt smooth!

Too bad after about two weeks it was scratched up! The tint place got to remove and replace my tint AND add the felt. For free.

Traffic142,

Your idea won't work. It is not the window glass edge guides that cause the problem. It is the "felt" inner window seal/wiper that scratches the tint. And it will scratch it all the way across the window from front to back, top to bottom.

In short, if you are planning on getting your windows tinted, get the felt installed. It is VERY cheap insurance.

OKay - I'm having a hard time visualizing this felt that everyone is talking about. My windows were already tinted before I bought the car. How can I tell if they've had felt installed or not?

Thanks!

Lower a window and check the inside channel. There should be some felt attached to the hard rubber like there is on the outside.

My guess is the guy probably didn't want to go through the hassle of putting the felt on...

Called my guy up and didn't even have a chance to ask about the felt, I told him what kind of car I had and he said, "Ok, well I have to add felt to your doors so it will be 20 bucks more."

But he had to take off parts of the door panel to get to the strip to install the felt so it was a little more effort than if he hadn't done it.

My tint got scratched within the first week after the tint was installed. I put felt on the inside channel the next weekend and in 3 months there have been no new scratches or spread from the existing ones.

When I called my tint shop up to make an appointment for tinting, he already knew about adding felt and the fact that the window moves up and down with the door opening before i got the chance to mention it. he told me when i made the appt that "ok well for your Mustang we'll need a little bit longer so that we can install felt and let the windows dry a bit more before the door is closed" - i was pretty amazed he knew!

he's been in the business for a while and even did the felt on the previous generation mustangs...i suppose he's learned his lesson and won't tint a 'stang without felt.

so far, no scratches at all. if your tint place won't do it, find another tint place and save yourself the hassles.

I specifically asked the same thing and my tint guy said there should be no problems. The tint is scratch proof and has a lifetime warranty. Week later I got scratches. I figure just take it back right before summer.

No felt, scratched in 2 weeks. Tint shop will re-do it tomorrow. I have some felt, but, I couldn't get the knack of getting it on right and I don't want to take off the door panel. I'll give it to them and see what they can do.
