Seat Brackets and Rust

Question for you guys/gals...

I am getting some rust on my metal seat brackets from winter road salt (I assume).

Any suggestions for cleaning and preventing more rust? I was thinking of removing the rust with some sandpaper/rust remover and painting with black touchup paint?

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Dan

I just noticed the same thing the other day on my car. I live in Florida, so it may be the salty air from living on a peninsula. Anyway, I too have been thinking about how to address this problem. I’m not ready to paint, so I may simply wipe the affected area with some phosphoric acid which turns the oxidation black and neutralizes it. I may even add a very minimal coating of oil to inhibit further oxidation. If that doesn’t last, then I will paint.

Sounds like a plan Phil.

Anyone been successful at solving this problem? Preventing it from occuring again in salty conditions?

Hmmm...When I cleaned her up two weeks ago, I noticed some rusty pieces.I just thought it was one more cheap thing about my NICE car. My car has never been wet inside. I live on the Texas Gulf Coast, never take her on the beach. I don't consider it salty air, but then again, it's all I know.

Naval Jelly should fix that right up. Paint might be in order as well to prevent further rusting. Pix?

I would suggest rust inhibitor paint, it does the same thing phosporic acid will do

Thanks guys. I used some rust eater gel, some sandpaper, a bit of dremel + sanding tool and some tremclad paint applied with a paintbrush. Worked great. I'll try to keep the salt off this winter with a mat or carpet which extends far enough back.
