I used to use 1/4" to 5/16" foam weatherstripping tape between the box and the sub. Just be sure to pre-punch the screw holes before attempting to tighten down the sub. That stuff always worked for me. It "fills in" any extra gaps and mounting holes that exist to keep the box air-tight.
Another product you could try is the rope style caulk between the box and the sub. It does not make a mess or harden, so removal of your sub at a later time is no problem.

I use rope caulk. It's a window sealant that is kinda like grey clay, but it never dries, and can be cleaned off the surfaces easily. It also decouples the driver from the mounting surface somewhat. It comes in a box for about 4$, and it is enough to do probably 110000 speakers.

Dan Wiggins of Adire Audio suggested it to me many years ago, and I've done it for every driver I've mounted since. It works too well not to use it.
